The Devil with Charm

Part 8

Nancy's POV

"Are you coming or not?"

I impatiently tapped my foot against the wooden floor of our new apartment and waited for Emma. We had two days before college started and I wanted to see this town as much as possible before college started. We had eaten a light lunch and Emma said that she wanted to come along with me. She wanted a "quick" showed before we started. I could see how quick the shower was.

"I am, hang on a minute. " Emma replied from her room. I had had a quick shower and put on a graphic T-shirt with a pair of jeans and my converse slippers. While I waited for Emma by the door, I went through my phone. There were a few texts from Dad and some high school friends and two missed calls from an unknown number. I guessed it was some classmate with a new number and decided to call back after I returned. While I was going through my Instagram, I heard hurried movement which signalled Emma's approach.

"Let's go!" She exclaimed and started pulling me towards the lift.

"Hey wait. Do any of you have keys?" Daniel asked-shouted from the apartment.

"Not me, " Emma shouted back.

"Me neither, " I said.

"Then any one of you better carry them 'cause I'm going for a stroll in sometime, " Daniel replied.

I peeked into the living room from the main door. Daniel was getting up and about to move towards his room.

"You...can come with us if you like, " I offered.

He looked up. "I'm gonna shower and then leave, " he said.

'That's okay, we'll wait, " I said with a smile and, indicating to Emma to come back inside, walked back into our apartment. Daniel's face portrayed pure wonder. I was sure he was wondering what had caused this sudden sweet behavior. He muttered a shocked "Okayy" and went into his room. I plonked down on a bean bag and, fidgeting on my phone, waited for Daniel to return.

"You're done?"

I asked in amazement as Daniel stepped out of his room. It wasn't even 6 minutes since he had left for a shower. Man, that was fast.

"Yeah, I don't take an eternity to shower unlike some people, " he said tipping his head towards Emma. I suppressed a giggle and Emma scowled at him.

"So let's move, " I said before Emma could counter attack with his icy words.

We got out, I locked the door and moved towards the lift. Once we were inside, Daniel pressed the ↓ button and left jostled down. It suddenly stopped on the 1st floor. The doors opened and I saw a boy who looked like a college student, standing outside. When he saw me, his eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped a little. He quickly backed and ran out of sight.

"You scared the poor fellow, " Daniel said in a sickly sweet tone.

"Yeah like I am some ghost out of a graveyard, " I shot back.

"Not far from one though, " Emma said out of nowhere.

I shot her a I'll-get-you-later look and crossed my elbows across my chest.

The lift opened at the ground floor and we all got out.

We reached the entrance of the building and stopped.

"So where to?" Emma asked.

"Maybe we could just walk. Let's walk straight on left, then on the first left turn, then straight, then 2nd right, then straight and 1st right. Let's see where we land. "
