The meeting afterwards went smoothly. Griffin clapped him on the back as a congrats. "I still take credit for completion of the assignment," he told Luke, sounding more like a threat than a passing comment.
The whole way to the hotel room, Luke tried to figure out some way to tell Carson of the situation she was in. But how? "Hey Carson, uh, you broke into our network, so I'm supposed to kill you now." Not very subtle.
He couldn't get his thoughts together and before he knew it, he was standing outside the door of room 841. Luke knocked twice and in less time than he could put his hand down, the door opened and he was pulled inside.
"Tell me what the hell is going on." Carson demanded, fear clear in her eyes.
"Why'd you open the door so quickly? I could've been a –"
"A murderer?" Carson supplied, rolling her eyes. Luke stayed silent, wearing a blank face and not knowing how to respond.
"Talk! Why am I here?" Carson asked again, losing her patience fast.
Luke opened his mouth to speak but his phone vibrated inside his pocket, causing him to mumble a "hold on" to Carson and check his notification.
"Shit," Luke mumbled. "I have another assignment."
"You what?" Carson asked, now completely frustrated that she wasn't getting any information from him.
Luke looked at her for a moment, debating whether or not he should bring her. He didn't want her to see what he was about to do. But, at least if he took her along, he would know how she was. If she was to stay back at the hotel, he wouldn't have a clue if she was safe until he got back.
"Come with me," Luke commanded, grabbing onto Carson's sleeve.
"No! Not until you give me a some idea why –"
"Someone's out to kill you. Now let's get a move on." He pulled her forcefully out the door, Carson giving little resistance and in utter disbelief as to what she just heard.
"Stay here," Luke said, guiding her into a space behind the building. "Don't move."
"You know, you give a lot of orders for someone who just met me yesterday," Carson sighed, annoyed and resolving to rule out what Luke told her before about someone out to kill her as false.
Luke tried not to let the comment irritate him. He got a vibe from her that she didn't believe him about what he had said earlier. He was saving her, wasn't he? She should feel grateful. Or at the very least, acknowledge that what he was telling her was not a lie.
But Carson did as she was told and stayed put. Luke had already been texted the codes for what his target's appearance was – he knew what he was looking for.
It wasn't long before he found her. She was walking around alone at a snack bar in a back room – one that conveniently led to an emergency staircase that led outside. In a matter of seconds, he had blindfolded her and was on his way down the stairs with the target over his shoulder. Before he could think about what he was doing, he'd pulled out his gun, attached the silencer, and shot her through the chest.
Luke immediately heard a muffled screech come from Carson. She was about to dart to the woman to help her, but Luke held her back. "It's too late. She's dead."
"What the fuck did you just do?!" Carson screamed, her voice sounding breathless from lack of oxygen. "You just shot her!"
"I know I did," Luke responded. "Now I need to look over the scene and we have to get out of here."
"No! We have to call someone to help!" Carson was still straining against Luke's grip, trying to get to the woman to somehow help her. "Where the fuck did you even get a gun? Why did you just do that?! You just fucking shot her!"
"Stop. We need to –"
"Don't touch me!" Carson wrenched her arm out of Luke's grasp and backed away. "Stay away from me, you – you murderer."
Luke almost winced at that comment but instead calmly said, "Listen. You're not safe. You have to stay with me or –"
"With you?! You just shot a woman through the chest with no remorse and you're telling me I'm going to be safe with you. You're out of your goddamned mind." She looked like she was about to pass out.
Taking small steps closer to her, Luke spoke in a low voice, "I'm telling you right now, the only way you'll stay safe is if you stay with me. Believe it or not, there are people trying to kill you. And guess what? I'm attempting to help you, but only if you'll let me."
By now Carson was in hysterics, laughing to herself at how absolutely insane this situation was. "A murderer's telling me that he's trying to help me from being murdered. And that I should go with him to stay safe. Because that makes total and complete sense!"
Luke was losing patience. "Alright then. Remember that guy who pulled you out of the meeting I accompanied you to? If you don't want that happening again, you'd better stay with me." He enunciated every word to make sure she understood the severity of the circumstances. "Now follow me if you want, but I'm about to leave."
Luke surveyed over the area and picked up the gun shelling before beginning to walk back to the hotel. To his relief, although he wouldn't say it out loud, he heard Carson's frantic footsteps hurrying to catch up to him. He pulled out his phone and sent out a text.

Oh, you've got to be kidding me, Luke internally groaned as he saw Griffin leaning by the front of the hotel. "Go in through the back door. I'll meet you upstairs. Don't talk to anyone."
By now Carson was too tired to argue so she did as she was told. Luke took in a deep breath, exhaled, and walked up to the front of the hotel.
"Alright, buddy," Griffin spit out. "I know she's not dead yet."
Luke instantly knew what he was referring to and a chill went down his spine.
"I don't know why you would lie about killing her. Maybe for prestige, who knows? But you better not let me find her or she will die a more painful death than I had planned in the first place, and you're going to watch. And I know how you are about this torture stuff. Have I made myself clear?"
He didn't wait for an answer as he pushed past Luke and made his way to his own hotel.
