He made his way to the backlot of the local gym, standing clear from the view of the one security camera attached to the roof of the building. Brian Holst was the subject of this task, targeted for successfully breaching the A3 system. And Luke was assigned to kill him.
Any minute now, he thought to himself. From under his trench coat he pulled out his gun and began attaching a suppressor to it. Those were two of the only things he ever carried. A P22 and a silencer.
He braced himself against the wall, listening for the click of the door opening, and when the sound came, he swiftly cocked back the gun and took his aim at the target…who was not there.
What? Where did he go? Luke thought as he lowered his gun. A blow came to his upper back and he stumbled forward, dropping his gun in the process.
“Thought you could take me out so easily?” Brian scoffed, chuckling darkly. “I know you guys are onto me. It’s not going to be so simple.”
Luke lunged forward to grab his gun but Brian kicked it out of the way and then pinned him to the ground. The glint of a knife shone in the corner of Luke’s eye and as the blade raced towards Luke’s neck, he braced his hand against the handle.
“Now that’s a nice little experiment that you’ve got going on in your headquarters,” Brian smiled malignantly, pushing the knife down with more pressure. “Would be a shame if someone were to steal it.”
Luke knew his gun was right there, and he just had to reach up above his head and grab it.
“You’ll never get it because by the end of tonight, you’ll be dead,” Luke said, voice tight as he strained to reach his gun.
“Ain’t that funny,” Brian said, “because this looks like the reversed situation.” Luke let out a yelp as the blade slipped onto his hand as he was holding it back from his face, the blood from his palm dripping down his arm.
“It is funny,” he gasped, fingers brushing against the barrel. “Because you would think you’re smart enough to know a man’s weak points.” Luke brought his foot up full speed and nailed him where it hurt, quickly moving his head so that the dropped knife wouldn’t touch his face. He swiped the gun off the ground and fired a single round into the man’s chest, rendering him lifeless.
Luke brushed himself off and inspected his wounded hand. Doesn’t look like it needs stitches. I’ll be fine.
After sweeping over the scene for any evidence of his own blood, he carefully took Brian’s knife that had his own fingerprints laced on them and fled.
An hour of walking in different directions brought him to a 24-hour diner. He was about to walk past it when his stomach let out a loud growl. I guess I could use some food.
Stepping inside, he found himself in the slow hours of the small diner, with only a few customers sitting here and there, quietly eating their meals. He made his way to the counter, glancing around nervously, and slid onto one of the bar stools. He jumped as a honk came from the seat.
“I’ll be right there!” A voice called from the back room.
What a useless alert mechanism, he thought to himself, taking out his phone and sending a text.
Beta: A2-14-O
When he looked up, a girl appeared from the door and stood in front him, smiling. “Sorry if the seat scared you. The boss insisted on having it to give the diner ‘character.’ What can I get you?”
“Um, whatever’s today’s special,” he said, not opening the menu she handed him.
“That would be the chicken dinner with a side of mashed potatoes, sound good?” She asked, taking back the menu and jotting down the order on a notepad.
“Sure,” he mumbled, toying with his phone.
She seemed to be looking at him longer than she should, so when Luke looked up, he saw bright gray eyes watching him curiously.
“Does the stranger have a name?” She asked. It didn’t sound like she was being pushy. It sounded more like she genuinely wanted to know.
Luke hesitated, not knowing whether he should give his name. “Yes.”
She laughed - a light, melodic sound. “Of course you do. Well, I’ll be back with your food in a few.”
When the food came, the girl continued with her work, cleaning off other tabletops and counting the money in the register. “I’m sorry if I sounded rude when I asked for your name,” she said, while pushing the drawer back into the register. “It’s just that this is a small town, and I haven’t seen you around. I usually call everyone here by name.”
A woman with her child came up to the counter, handing the girl a tip. “Thanks, Carson. Have a nice evening.”
“No problem, you too, Kathryn,” the girl, Carson, apparently, replied. Carson gave Luke a look, “Like that.”
“I see,” he said, reaching for his wallet. Well, he was out of there in a few days anyway. It didn’t matter. “I’m Luke, nice to meet you. Carson, right?”
She flashed him a friendly smile, “Yep, nice to meet you too, Lu- oh my goodness, what happened to your hand?”
Luke looked down at the cut that had now opened up and cursed under his breath. “I’m sorry, I cut myself on a fence down the block.” He tried to stop the flow of blood but it was no use.
“Don’t move, I’ll get a first aid kit,” she said and rushed to the back room. In a second she was back, applying rubbing alcohol on the gash and wrapping it in gauze, all within a minute. It stung like hell, but to Carson, it was like Luke didn’t even feel it.
“Thank you,” Luke said after a moment, looking over his bandaged hand.
“Of course,” Carson answered, stuffing extra medical gauze and supplies back into the kit. “Happens to me all the time. Didn’t it hurt though? Always hurts like a bitch for me when I put on the alcohol to disinfect it.”
“No,” Luke said monotonously. He checked his watch. He was supposed to meet with Griffin in a half hour. “I should be going now. Thank you, again.”
Carson tilted her head to the side, peering at the guy. “Yeah…no problem.”
This made Luke look back at her, wondering why she was so fascinated with him. I’ve spent too long here.
“Alright, well, I’ll see you around then, Luke,” she said, going back to her business.
Hopefully not, Luke thought to himself. But he gave her a nod and went on his way.
