The day began as peaceful in the kingdom of (k/n). It was rich in agriculture, and was close to the sea, resulting in it being a successful port. Constant trade and commerce amongst the people and kingdoms took place in (k/n), and the streets were always bustling and alive.
But today was an especially exciting day for the people of (k/n). The smiling citizens crowded the small streets, and they all began to make their way towards the castle...
"____!!!" The maid's voice only contributed to her growing headache. "Yes, Elizabeth?" She huffed, putting her hands on her hips with a scowl. "Princess! You're not even dressed!!!" ____ let out a long, tired sigh. "I'm sorry." "No! This is unacceptable! Out of your sleeping gown this instance!!!" The princess rolled her eyes, but obeyed and wiggled out of her clothes, leaving her in her undergarments. "Honestly, ____, when are you going to grow up?" The short woman scolded her as she opened the dresser. "I'm only 17, Elizabeth..." "But you are our princess!! And it is your duty to act for the benefit of your kingdom and your people." Elizabeth held out a long, fluffy white dress. ____ only looked back with sad eyes. "Don't give me that look. Try to smile. After all, this is your big day, and it only happens once."
Yes, the princess was to be married. Her groom was a prince named Matthias. He was a handsome man, with spikey blonde hair and a dashing smile. The marriage was to signifying peace between the two neighboring kingdoms. As a princess, it was supposed to be an honour and her duty... But ____ couldn't shake the feeling of dread away. She didn't love Matthias. She didn't want to marry him. But she had no choice. ____ was merely a gift to their new ally, an object to bring him pleasure. Her life would now be his...
'I just want to run away...' The wishful thought drifted through her mind. "Come now. Let me help you into your dress." As Elizabeth moved her about and assisted her into the beautiful gown, ____ stood there, numb as she longingly stared out the window. She could see the roofs of buildings, and behind them, the ocean, sparkling in the sun's rays. Her (e/c) eyes shimmered with tears. 'But I can't. I'm stuck here, in this damn dress, and I'm marrying someone I hardly know. Princess? An honour? No... It's a curse.'
The maid tightened the corset with a grunt. ___ felt stiff and trapped. "There. Now turn." Slowly, she turned to Elizabeth, trying to hide her tears behind her bangs. "You look beautiful, ____. Now untie that hair." She gently tugged at the ribbon holding up her hair. The gorgeous, (h/c) locks fell, framing her tears stricken face. Elizabeth just sighed. "This is hard... But you are a princess." She gently took a handkerchief, wiping at her cheeks. "It's what you were born to do. You have to marry. It is inevitable. But this boy is a good one. And you will be happy. But you must be willing to let yourself be happy." ____ looked down at her, biting her lip with a soft nod. Elizabeth let a smile stretch across her face. Her brown eyes shined. "Good. Now..." And she reached into her pouch, pulling out a small box. "This is for you." The wooden box felt light in ____'s hands. Gently, she opened it and let out a small gasp.
Inside was a stunning gold locket. It was shaped like a rose, and a red jewel was in the center. Her finger traced over it lightly. "It... Was your mother's." ____ stiffened at the words."Before she died... She told me to give it to you on your wedding day." ____ could feel tears welling in the corners of her eyes. "She would be proud of you." "E-Elizabeth..." Her voice cracked, and she pulled the old woman into a tender embrace. "Thank you for always being here for me." "Of course. It's my job, after all." ____ let her go, managing a solemn smile. "Are you ready?" She nodded in reply. "Good..." They made their way to the large oak doors. "After you, Princess ____."
She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath... "Alright." They opened suddenly.
"Let the bells ring!"
-----
From far of, the loud clanging of wedding bells could be heard. Green eyes glittered, and a mouth pulled into a devilish smile. "It seems it's time, no?"
-----
The people of (k/n) cheered loudly. Rice was thrown. Flowers were tossed. The princess made her way down the streets in a carriage, guarded by knights on horses. She put on a false smile and waved to the people who happily waved in return. 'Everyone seems so happy...' ____'s face fell and she dropped her gaze to her lap. 'Everyone except for me...'
Soon the carriage came to a halt. Her chest tightened. "Princess, are you ready?" A knight asked from outside. "Uhh..." She trailed off, her mind racing. Thoughts flooded her mind.
'I could run. Run as fast as I can go... No, they'll catch me.'
'I won't marry him! I won't!'
'I have no choice...'
'I'll kill myself. I'll drink poison. I'll jump from the highest tower. As soon as the wedding is done, I will end it all.'
But she glanced out at her people... She inhaled sharply, and despite all the thoughts, she replied...
"Y-Yes." He nodded and opened the door, offering her his hand. She took it thankfully and stepped from the carriage. "____..." She looked up. It was her old childhood friend, Alfred. "Congratulations." But his face was grim. "It's funny. I always thought I'd be the one to marry you. Now I'm having to watch you marry someone you hardly know..." ____'s heart throbbed. She cleared her throat. "I will give you a royal blessing..." ____ took his face in her hands, and with a tear, she kissed his forehead. She could feel him take a sharp breath, and she quickly leaned close to his ear. "I would have loved marrying you, Alfred..." The whisper was only for him to hear. His blue eyes were wide as she pulled away, giving him a bitter smile. "Take care, my hero." And she turned, pulling down her veil to cover her face and teary eyes.
The king stood from his seat at the sight of his daughter. "SILENCE!!" Slowly, the crowd hushed. He coughed into his hand roughly, then regained his composure. "Now... Presenting Princess ____!!!" Horns sounded with merriment. The King smiled. "Let the ceremony commence!!!" The music then began, and ____ began to walk down the long red carpet. The people of (k/n) lightly clapped, smiling widely as their princess walked by. Oh, joy!!! She was in love and was going to marry!!! Sound the horns!!! Ring the bells!!!... This is what they wanted to see... But was it true? No. Not at all. ____ was being forced into a marriage with someone she didn't even like. And she'd never get to leave his side. She was a trophy. A symbol of peace. Nothing more...
Her hands were knotted tightly in front of her. She held her chin high, her (e/c) eyes shining with tears of sorrow. She could see Matthias, who stood by the king with a smirk. 'This isn't right...'
'Someone...'
'Save me...'
