I refused to believe this. Some suck-ass band was stealing the song we were playing tonight.
They had introduced themselves as 5 Seconds of Summer. What kind of name was that?
They played "American Idiot", "I Miss You", and "Dear Maria, Count Me In".
And people cheered for them. I scowled as I heard tremendous clapping roaring through the room.
It was our turn to play now. I turned to my band members. Will and Summer were arguing over the band while Mina remained silent.
"We're playing 'It's My Life' instead. Got it?" I said.
They all nodded and quickly we quickly went on stage and set up.
Mina started playing her drums and I felt the beat swallowing me as Will strummed the guitar heavily and Summer plucked the strings of her bass.
"This ain't a song for the brokenhearted," I started singing.
The lyrics came out smooth and nice and I let them hang in the air until I sang the next line.
Soon enough, I sang the chorus and Summer and Will joined me, Mina singing softly, almost whispering as if she was the bass to our voices.
My heart was pounding and adrenaline coursed through my veins as I got stuck in the lyrics and the beat and the strumming of electric guitars. I got lost in it all and the world around me became a simple blur.
Before I knew it, we were done with all three pieces and I was standing there, sweating like crazy and breathing heavily as the crowd beneath me roared, making a smile lift upon my face.
We quickly put our instruments away and climbed down the stairs.
That had to be one of my best performances this month. I just knew it.
We remained silent and watched as a couple more bands performed, none of them getting quite as many claps as us.
Finally, it was over. They were about to announce the winners but I was too tired to stay. It was always us anyways.
"Looks like we have a tie," the host announced.
My head snapped up.
A tie?
"The winners are," the drummers started making a drum roll, (a tradition they'd had for a long time) "5 Seconds of Summer and Bad Luck!"
"Gotta go now," Summer whispered in my ear.
She looked a bit jumpy and Max was urging her to hurry up.
"Bye," I said as nicely as I could.
Summer left but Mina looked at my pissed off face and rolled her eyes.
"It's just a little game, Bailey. Don't get so worked up about it," she said.
Soon enough, she left too.
"I guess I'll leave too," Will said nervously and walked away.
Damn, I must look really pissed off. Only Mina would have the nerve to mess with me when I was like this.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
I tried calming myself down.
By now, most people had left. It was only a small group of people left inside. Unfortunately, they were the four guys from 5 Seconds of Summer, and that set me off real good.
I stormed over to a tall blonde with blue eyes.
Damn, now that I was closer to him, I realized he was over a foot taller than me.
"Out of all places you could go to, you just had to perform here, huh?" I snapped.
Blondie turned around and looked a bit surprised but soon shifted his face to smirk.
"From the south, eh?" he asked. He had a thick Australian accent.
I glared at him until a bleached-hair boy slapped his back and said, "The southern ones are feisty. You gotta good one, Luke."
"Shut it, Michael," Luke said.
He just laughed and walked away.
Luke turned back to me. "Looks like we beat ya."
"Tied, actually," I said coolly.
"Who's your drummer?" a curly haired boy asked me suddenly.
I ignored him and Luke said, "So what's your name?"
"'nd why should I tell ya?" I scoffed.
He grinned. "Can't ask you out if I don't know your name."
I snorted. "Please. The most positive response you'd get is a kick in the crotch."
He smirked. "We'll see."
"In your dreams," I muttered and stomped out.
As soon as the door closed behind me, I heard one of the boys say something but it came out muffled. I ignored it and got in my car to start the engine.
I started playing my Beatles CD and rolled the window down so I could feel the cool night air blowing across my face.
The sky was beautiful tonight; it was dotted with a million little silvery spots of diamonds.
I remember as a child that Mom would always tell me that the stars had been pieces that fell off the moon and got stuck in the sky. She told me that sometimes they fell to the earth and became people. She used to tell me that I was one of those people.
A harsh knock on the passenger window snapped me out of my thoughts. I leaned over to roll the window down. It was Luke.
"What do you want?" I snapped.
"I kinda need a ride home," he said sheepishly.
I frowned. "Go ask one of your band buddies."
"They're going to a party," he said.
"Well then, go with 'em," I said.
I don't—I don't," he sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I don't really like parties."
I raised an eyebrow.
"Listen, that wasn't me in there. I'm not like—"he started.
"You can get it," I interrupted.
This kid seriously needed to grow up, but I felt sorry for him. Will used to be like this all the time before I dragged him to a party, where he ended up making out with one of the guys on the football team.
He gave me a small smile and climbed in.
I pulled out onto the road and asked him for his address. He gave me the directions until I reached a small, blue house.
"This is it," he said as he climbed out. "Thanks."
Then he turned around and said, "You never told me your name."
"Bailey."
And I drove away.
