For a long moment Silas gazed up at the packed earth which acted as his resting place.
He couldn't understand what it was that had awoken him.
Normally he was not one to awaken before the sun had set completely but a ripple of...something had swept through him, forcing air into his lungs and his eyes open.
There was still at least twenty minutes before he could ascend from the basement and he quickly tossed aside the idea of lolling within his dirt cacoon. There was a reason that they had decided to place their sleeping cove underneath the house rather than out amongst the words.
Of course, it meant stronger protections since they were together but it also allowed any who was restless to rise at any time throughout the day without fear of being exposed to the deadly effects of the sun.
Silas gently waved a hand and floated up until his already booted feet stood at the very edge of his 'grave'.
There was silence throughout the rest of the room, none of his brothers had been disturbed and he tilted his head, once more puzzled over the fact that something must have occurred to call him from Immortal slumber.
Closing his eyes he drew in a breath and relaxed, his sensitive ears searching for the sound of the small human woman who currently resided in the home above them. She was a surprise, an unknown when all of the secrets of this world had been laid bare many centuries ago.
Twelve hundred years he had existed and the last two had proved to filled more shocks than what he had previously experienced. No human had been found to possess abilities such as she but, as Silas spent more time in her presence, he realised how wildly impossible it was that one of their enemies had slipped her into their midst.
Any one of them, including the hybrids, would know that they were an extremely suspicious group of warriors. Wary enough that should she prove a threat, they would take all necessary steps to eliminate her and her masters.
But Silas was not a creature bound or controlled by the instinct to assume the worst. He would watch and wait, assess her actions and thoughts.
He would give her every opportunity to prove her loyalties, and he would ensure that his voice was heard if his brothers attempted action before action was warranted.
"Look how gorgeous you are," The voice whispered through his ears, almost startling him as he realised that his musings had distracted him from the task of checking on Sang.
Intrigued by the soft note in her voice and what it was she referred to as gorgeous, he walked over until he stood looking up at the basement's only entrance.
"I'm glad you decided not to kill me. It would have made this the absolutely worst holiday ever although I'm not sure if things can get any worse. Immortals who have intentions to kill me and a hybrid who wants me for reasons no one can explain." She chuffed, "In fact, you might be the only part to actually make me smile. Do you have a name?"
The small growling whine which followed her question had Silas' own eyes darkening as he thrust his mind into hers, needing to see through her.
There she was.
He cursed, glad that he had thought enough to prevent her from realising that he was effectively locked within her own body.
The stupid woman was standing in the shadows of the trees lining the front clearing, proof that she had broken her promise to Sean.
But what had his heart pounding was the fact that cupped between her vulnerable hands, pressed in close to her body was a large wolf.
Granted, he could sense that it was neither a Lycan or Hybrid but that didn't detract from the knowledge that she, would had no ability to protect herself, was currently cuddling and crooning at a big fucking wolf!
The swearing, an indication of how out of control the situation was rapidly becoming, Silas pulled from her mind as he quickly sent an urgent demand out to his brothers, hopeful that they would awaken to assist before he perished.
The sun was still too high for him to escape unscathed but he couldn't sit in the darkness and wait for the creature to turn vicious as he expected it would when the foolish girl eventually triggered its natural instincts.
"Get away from it now," He bit out, his fangs dropping until they violently pierced his bottom lip.
Her gasp accompanied the sound of him flying through the solid wood flooring of the house, a hole now decorating the middle of one of the empty rooms.
Although twilight was only less than half an hour off, the weak sunlight pierced at his eyes, almost blinding him as he quickly attempted to call for the clouds to provide him some protection.
His skin tingling with heat, Silas pushed down a pained roar as he flew through the open front door.
Sang had slowly begun to turn towards the house, skin pale and eyes wide, but the speed of his run meant that he had thrown the wolf away from her before she was even aware that he was outside.
Silas stopped between her and the danger, his voice rumbling with warning as he pushed away the pain of his skin slowly starting to heat and burn.
"Run into the house," He barked at the woman, his eyes tracking the enraged animal as it pushed to its feet and slowly started forward, its teeth also on display.
"Silas, stop!" Sang cried, her gazed horrified as she watched the Immortal's arm and neck begin to blacken. A creature of darkness, she knew that what he was risking by being outside during daylight hours.
He was putting himself in danger because he thought that her new, and albeit, dangerous friend was a threat.
"You need to go back in the house," Silas hissed again, bracing his body in preparation for the wolf's attack.
"No," She daringly touched his shirt covered back. "You need to get out of the sun. The wolf isn't going to hurt me."
"Foolish woman," He growled, his body screaming in agony. Even as old as he was, the sun was one thing Immortals had no defence against.
The creature leaped at Silas, its jaws widened to bite down on whatever limb it could reach but before it could reach the warrior, Sang used the Immortal's weakness and surprise to push him aside, her scream piercing as those deadly teeth closed around the arm she had raised to protect her face.
