The clock struck midnight, but instead of joy, I felt unease. It was my birthday, a day that should have been filled with excitement and celebration, yet the air in my room felt different—heavier, colder. The familiar creaks and groans of the house seemed sharper, louder, as if the walls themselves were straining under some unseen weight. I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to shake the unease creeping up my spine.
At first, I thought I was just tired. I closed my eyes, waiting for sleep to take me, but instead, it delivered something far more unsettling.
When I opened my eyes again, I couldn't move. My body was frozen, paralyzed as if my limbs had turned to stone. I could still see, though—see the faint glow of the moonlight spilling through my window, casting long, distorted shadows on the walls. And then, I saw him.
It started as a flicker in the corner of my vision—a shape unfolding from the darkness. At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, but no. The figure was real, impossibly tall, its head nearly brushing the ceiling. It moved toward me with a slow, deliberate grace, its long arms hanging unnaturally at its sides.
The most horrifying thing, though, was its face—or rather, the absence of one. Where features should have been, there was only smooth, pale nothingness. And yet, I felt its gaze, heavy and invasive, as if it could see straight through me.
I wanted to scream, to thrash, to do anything to break the spell of stillness that gripped my body. But I couldn't. I could only watch as the faceless figure loomed closer and closer, until it was mere inches from my face. The air around it felt colder, and the silence was deafening, as though the world itself was holding its breath.
Then, I heard it—not aloud, but in my mind—a voice deep and resonant, like a vibration that echoed in the hollow of my chest.
"I'm sorry, my dear," it said, its tone strangely gentle. "I wanted to tell you happy birthday. That was the only way I could see you."
The words lingered, both unsettling and absurd. My terror should have spiked, but instead, a strange numbness settled over me. I blinked, and he was gone.
The next morning, I convinced myself it was just sleep paralysis. A bad dream. A trick of the mind. But deep down, I wasn't sure.
That night, as I wandered down the hallway of my house, the air grew heavy again. The long corridor stretched before me, the dim light of the fixtures flickering as though something was disrupting their glow. I stopped halfway, my stomach twisting into knots.
There, at the far end of the hallway, he stood.
I didn't scream. I didn't run. I just stood there, frozen, staring at him. His silhouette filled the space, his long, lanky form blending with the shadows as though he was a part of them. He didn't move—didn't need to. His presence alone swallowed the hallway, the walls seeming to close in around him.
For a moment, I thought I heard his voice again, faint and distant. "Happy birthday," it whispered. Then, as abruptly as he had appeared, he vanished, leaving only the flickering lights and a chill that seeped into my bones.
Since that night, I haven't seen him again, but I still feel him sometimes—a weight in the room, a fleeting shadow in the corner of my eye. I don't know what he wanted, or why he chose that night to appear, but one thing is certain: I'll never forget the birthday guest who came uninvited.
And sometimes, when the lights flicker or the shadows stretch too long, I can almost hear him whispering again, "I just wanted to see you."
