My wolf howled into the chilly morning, a deep, resonant sound that echoed across the still landscape. Beneath the shadows of towering pine trees, he sensed an unease in the atmosphere, a thick tension that clung to the air like mist. I couldn't pinpoint the source of his distress, but it gnawed at my insides, compelling me to take action. Hours had slipped by while I'd stood on the outskirts of the little village, the comforting flicker of lights slowly fading into morning of dawn, and yet I remained paralyzed by uncertainty. Should I venture into the village, or linger in the shadows?

This was her home—my mate's sanctuary. A place where laughter danced on the wind and love was supposed to thrive. If I sensed any threat, I would leap into action without hesitation. But what was I saying? I had told myself time and again that I didn't care about her; yet here I was, a protector at heart, torn between my instincts and my fears. I didn't want her to fall in love with a monster like me. I wasn't a beast, yet I could feel the turmoil within me, rising just beneath the surface. My wolf howled again, a sound laced with urgency and pain. He needed me to act.

The idea of stepping out into the daylight naked flashed through my mind, but a memory of her gaze lingered—she had seen me in my natural state before. Shaking off the apprehension, I urged myself to focus as I grabbed my damp clothes from the snow, the chill of it biting into my skin. With every step I took to dress, a surge of determination pulsed through me. Once fully clothed, I stood still, feeling the familiar weight of purpose settle on my shoulders.

I moved with stealth towards the village gate, slipping between trees and allowing the shadows to cloak me. The moon cast an ethereal light across the ground, illuminating my path while I kept an eye out for any signs of trouble. As I approached the entrance, I noticed a cluster of wolves gathered—both he-wolves and she-wolves, their body language pointed and tense, their voices hushed yet filled with disdain.

"We're really going to follow her as our new Luna?" one he-wolf scoffed, his voice laden with ridicule. "Have you seen how she conducts herself?"

My fists clenched involuntarily, stifling the growl that threatened to escape my lips. I had never expected to witness wolves gossiping like this, yet here they were, circulating rumors and judgments like a pack of cackling hens. My hearing sharpened as I tried to catch the full details of their chatter.

"Riley can't be serious about this choice. I feel sorry for him, having to deal with Stephanie day in and day out," one murmured.

"She's too stubborn," another added with a laugh. "It's a surprise she's still alive!"

A fire of anger blazed deep within me, fierce and unrelenting. Why was I so driven to defend a female I scarcely knew? As if tethered to my instincts, my heart raced, knowing I couldn't ignore the unsettling critiquing of her character any longer. Her strength resonated with thoughts that stirred in me, prompting an urge to protect her—an instinct I found unsettling and exhilarating at the same time.

Just then, a she-wolf caught sight of a movement within the dense tree line—a sudden shift that sent her hackles up. The laughter died on their lips, replaced by a thick silence, and I could feel the tension crackle in the air. Whatever danger lurked beyond the cover of the trees, I was drawing closer.

The scent of lycans hung in the air like a distant whisper, a warning carried by the wind that hinted at the presence of wolf packs nearby. I crouched low among the shadowy trees, peering cautiously around the gnarled trunks as the she-wolves and he-wolves made their way through the underbrush, their sleek forms gliding with primal elegance. Sensing their approach, I circled back, redirecting my path as I moved sideways, leaping nimbly into the dense embrace of branches overhead. As I climbed, the twigs snapped beneath my weight, the sound sharp in the hushed forest.
