His question hung in the air like a charged storm. I was frozen, mirroring my wolf's intensity as she fixed her fierce gaze on him. In the depths of our shared mind, I felt her growl rumbling, a primal warning that sent a thrill through me. "No, not now," I pleaded silently, urging her to rein in her instincts before we crossed a line with the only person we were destined to be with. Being Luna was a burden I despised, but the electrifying tension that loomed ahead was about to change everything.
The atmosphere shifted abruptly, pulling my attention as Riley stood in front of me, his expression a mix of concern and annoyance. "You're not hurt, are you?" he asked, extending his hand toward my wolf, Rae. She growled menacingly, baring her sharp teeth in warning. Rae had never taken a liking to Riley, a sentiment I found puzzling since I managed to coexist with him without conflict.
"Come on now, you still can't hate me. After all, we're already mates," he pleaded with a hint of desperation.
"Mates, my ass! You just want control," Rae snarled through me, her disdain palpable. She cast a furious glare at him, an embodiment of her fierce independence. "Besides, we were just getting some fresh air. Learn to deal with it," she pressed on, determined to walk past him.
"C'mon, Rae," he coaxed, his voice dropping an octave, resonating with the deep timbre of his wolf, but she was resolute in her defiance.
"You can't just get up and leave whenever you want. You are—"
"I am NOT," she retorted fiercely, turning her head over her shoulder to unleash another snarl, her paws striking the ground with a forceful stomp that echoed her frustration.
As I fought to maintain control over my wolf, I could feel the invisible tension drawing tighter in the air around us. Riley's wolf simmered beneath the surface, clearly agitated by Rae's blatant rejection of their bond. "You and I are done," she declared vehemently through me, every word like a stab to my heart.
With frustration boiling within me, I slammed my fists against the walls of my mind in a vain attempt to regain control. "Rae!" I shouted, desperation seeping into my voice before Riley could respond. He paused, the air thick with anticipation.
"Don't do this," I urged, the weight of the moment pressing down on us. "If you do, it will only make it worse for us."
"For you. Not for me," Rae said, her voice echoing through the quiet corners of my mind. It was an unusual experience—her words slipped out of me while she remained outwardly present. Was it strange that while I carried on this internal dialogue, she stood out there, vibrant and alive? I was mostly conversing with myself, a habit I had grown accustomed to. But perhaps that was just my normal, my reality.
Once Riley had a moment to process the unfolding scene, he transformed into his wolf form with a swift and fluid motion, launching himself after me as if I were his intended prey. I could see the determination in his eyes as he shifted, muscles rippling beneath his fur. In response, Rae bolted toward the village's exit, her instincts kicking in as panic spurred her pace. The air around us crackled with tension, and my heart raced as I felt the weight of Riley's pursuit behind me.
"You can't run from me!" his wolf snarled, a low growl rumbling through its chest. "You will be mine!" He bellowed, and I could hear the excitement in his voice attract the curious attention of others in the village. One by one, heads turned, eyes wide with intrigue and amusement.
Hedrick, standing off to the side, scooped up Riley's discarded clothes from the ground. With a bemused grin, he looked toward us, his laughter ringing clear and infectious. "Go get her, son!" he hollered, his voice booming across the expansive space. His words carried a playful challenge that only added to the chaos.
