Chapter 5

Later that evening Kevin sat on Edd's couch attempting to recite the answers to basic questions he had been asked about a hundred times.

"So Kevin please explain cellular respiration."

"Uh it's the process where both plants and animals release ...carbon dioxide into the atmosphere!"

"How so?"

"No clue." Kevin deadpanned

Edd sighed a smirk tugged at his lips, suddenly giving Kevin a large amount of motivation. "Both plants and animals release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere by converting carbohydrates and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water during cellular respiration. Then energy is released within the cells of organisms and made available for growth and repair and reproduction. carbon dioxide gas is released as a waste product."

Kevin nodded, truthfully he could care less about cells but Edd seemed to be enjoying himself well enough that Kevin considered it worth while. Inwardly however he still groaned, though Edd's little cell models and charts made understanding the material a little easier science just couldn't hold his attention for long. It wasn't like playing baseball or working on his bike...hey wait there's an idea! He picked up one of the little toy models and moved it around, until he placed it back on the table at an awkward angle.

"Edd I gotta thank you for this!" He smiled as the dork looked up from the papers seeming at little lost with the sudden detour in their conversation.

"Well, yes I suppose your welcome!" He gave Kevin a small smile which caused the red heads brain to temporarily shut down, quickly he flipped the emergency ON button so he didn't ramble like a fool.

"No no I mean, I want to do something to thank you...it's still kind of early, and the old candy shop should still be open?" Kevin's heart thudded violently against his chest as he watched Edd think it over. The brainiac seemed to blush before mumbling a "sure why not?"

Edd prayed to who ever was listening that he wouldn't screw this up. It may not be a date, it may not even last more then 30 minutes but he would be damned if he was to waste a second of this...whatever you would call it. Just two friends hanging out, that's all. Nothing special. But it seemed hopeless at this point to reason with himself. He was head over heels for the red head, tripping over his toes and tangling his words. He couldn't help but feel a bit sick at the idea of toying at his own feelings with a bit of false hope.

Kevin on the other hand was brimming with excitement, finally he had asked the dork out...even if it wasn't really a date...and Edd still didn't know how he felt...and he couldn't hold him quite yet. But still...it was something!!
