Princess Celestia’s POV
I took a deep breath. The crisp morning air invaded my lungs. A small smile slowly crept up my cheeks, but suddenly vanished with one glance at the moon. I looked away from the moon, and turned towards the four stars that surrounded it. My eyes paused at each one.
I closed my eyes before a tear could escape, but this didn’t help. A flash of bright eyes shattered into darkness before me.I shot up. My breathing had increased dramatically, as did my heart beat and I was sweating. I gasped for more air, but I couldn't hold it for long.
I am coming, a voice whispered in my head. This made me freeze in terror.
“Your Majesty!” The huge golden doors flung open and two guards stepped through. “Are—are you all right?”
Without a word, I got out of my bed, pushed past the guards, and raced to Luna’s room. Once I got there, I silently opened the huge golden doors of her bedroom.
Luna’s soft breathing pattern soothed me as I walked to my sleeping sister. I smiled. Knowing that she was safe was a big relief, but those shattered eyes kept me on the edge of my hooves.
“Luna?” I whispered.
Her eyes slowly opened. She noticed me and sat up quickly. Her wings unfolded, which made her look more professional and up to the task.
“Yes, sister. What is it?” she asked.
“Were you dream walking?” I asked, avoiding her question.
“Yes, why?” she replied.
“Oh.” I dodged her question again.
She looked disappointed, so I decided to answer one of her questions, but before I could she asked, “Why are you up so early? Dawn isn’t for awhile.”
“I—” I sighed. “I had a bad dream.”
“A nightmare?” she asked.
“N-no. Just a bad dream.” I refused to label the dream a nightmare. Luna was not a nightmare.
“Well . . .” Luna thought. “Would it be a good idea to go back to sleep? Tomorrow’s a big day. We don’t want the Princess of Equestria to be tired now, do we?”
“The Princesses of Equestria,” I corrected her.
She playfully rolled her eyes, but sorrow and loneliness lingered in them. The flash of shattered eyes shot through my mind. My heart crumbled. Luna saw this and immediately lighted up.
“Do you think you’d be able to sleep peacefully now?” Luna asked.
I sighed the doubt out of me and said, “Yeah.”
She smiled. “Good ’cause I’m tired!”
She laid down and pulled the covers over herself. I looked down at her. The peaceful rhythm of her breathing created a little lullaby for me and I opened my mouth to yawn. I turned and headed back to my room when a small voice made me turn around.
“Goodnight, Tia. I love you.”
“I love you too!” I answered. My heart had been warmed and love sprang from it.I flew, bringing the sun against the moon, a challenge I had to face and suffer every morning. I glanced over to the four stars that held my promise.
“Sister, I will see you soon.”
With the sun in its position, I steadily dove down to the Earth. I looked up at the moon, and thought, I did fine, but turned my back with a tear in my eye.
Once my tear hit the ground, the earth began to crack under me. The moon rose out of the ground and replaced the sun with darkness. An evil laugh split through the chaos and a whisper turned to a scream.
“I am coming!” it yelled.Everything went black and all I could hear was Luna’s earlier words echoing in my mind.
“A nightmare.”
