The announcer shushed the crowd. His robes were elegant and a brilliant purple color with gold accents. He waved over a boy who was folding in on himself a few feet away. The boy walked slowly closer to the announcer before coming to a spot over an X. The X marked where he was supposed to stand for this announcement.
The announcer cleared his throat. As he did so, the flaps of skin underneath his neck jiggled. Once the crowd was focused entirely on the ancient announcer, he began the customary speech.
"In the realm of Euforia where King Calden rules, there are six beings who each control one of the elements, Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Light, and Dark. Only one person may hold an elements power at a time. Power is transferred to the heir of an Elemental once the age of 16 is reached. At that time, the previous Elemental dies.
Aedus Fire, heir of Serefina Fire, at the age of 15 is too young to accept the Elemental power. However, due to Serefina's tragic death, there has been an exception. We are gathered here today to witness the heir accept his duties as Elemental of Fire."
All eyes of the strangers and acquaintances Aedus had never known well were on him and the announcer. They bore into the boy, and he squirmed under their intimidating gazes. Beside him, the announcer wasted no time reciting the terms he had to accept.
"Aedus Fire, do you understand you are required to have an heir with a normal being in order to transfer your power?"
"Yes," replied the amber eyed boy beside the announcer.
"Do you understand that no Elemental should mix with another to create an heir?"
"Yes."
"And do you understand you are bound to the crown and people of Euforia and are required to fulfill your duties as the Elemental of Fire?"
"Yes."
"Do you accept all of these terms?"
Aedus took a big breath in before he said, "Yes," again.
"I hereby declare Aedus Fire the current beholder of Fire. May you have a long and fulfilling life. Long live King Calden."
Everyone sang in chorus "Long live King Calden," back to the announcer.
Aedus, who now controlled Fire entirely on his own, was an empty shell. He didn't want this power. He wanted his mother back. No one noticed him as he slipped outside. No one, but one girl with blond hair and big, round eyes the color of the ocean she adored so much. She turned to her mother who was in an engaging conversation with a man, and tugged at her arm. The older woman's attention turned to her daughter. "Yes, sweetie?" She asked.
"Mother, will I be as sad as that boy when I'm announced the beholder of Water?"
"I hope not, sweetie. You'll be too ecstatic having full control of the ocean." The mother patted her daughter's hair lovingly. The daughter smiled than glanced at the wooden door the boy disappeared through moments before.
Her mother was right; she'd be overjoyed to fully control the ocean.
