Matt hadn't been home all day, and though Y/n tried to keep her mind busy, a small knot of worry had been sitting stubbornly in her chest. He'd texted her earlier, assuring her everything was fine—Foggy had roped him into helping choose tiles and color schemes for their new office space. The message made her smile faintly, picturing the two of them bickering over shades of blue or arguing about which tile looked "less like a hospital bathroom." Still, as the hours stretched on, the empty house felt heavier.
Y/n moved aimlessly from room to room, the quiet unnerving. She eventually packed a small suitcase for Amy's trip, neatly folding clothes and double-checking toiletries before leaving it by the front door. After dinner—a simple meal she barely tasted—she showered and changed into a worn, oversized sweatshirt that still smelled faintly of Matt.
Now, she was tucked beneath what felt like a mountain of blankets, staring at the ceiling as the cold night air crept in around the edges of the windows. The absence of Matt beside her was sharp, a hollow space on the other side of the bed that only seemed to grow with every passing minute.
The sudden buzz of her phone on the nightstand made her flinch. She reached for it quickly, her heart skipping when Matt's name lit up the screen. For a moment, she simply stared at it, debating if she wanted to hear what he had to say. Then, without thinking, she answered and pressed the phone to her ear.
"I'm going to be late," Matt's voice came through, rushed and apologetic. "Actually... I'm just going to stay with Foggy tonight."
Y/n swallowed hard, forcing herself to keep her voice steady as she whispered, "Okay." Rubbing the side of her face, trying to get the hair out of her line of vision. "I've been busy with the bakery anyways, I'm trying to find new hires." Coming up with some kind of excuse, knowing that Matt wasn't going to be able to hear her heartbeat through the phone.
