“XAVIER!” Zoey screamed. I kicked Vladimir off me, and he fell to the ground. “Xavier!” Zoey shouted again as I hung from the edge of the building.
“Zoey! Go! Now!” I shouted back.
“No! I’m not leaving without you!” She shouted, tears falling down her face. She offered her hand, but I shook my head.
“Zoey you have to go!” I said. “Vladimir could have survived the fall; you have to go finish the job!”
“XAVIER BAILEY DOES IT LOOK LIKE I CARE ABOUT FLIPPING VLADIMIR BRAN?!” Zoey screamed. I grinned.
“Apparently not,” I replied. “But I do. Now go! I’ll be there in a minute!”
“Fine!” She screamed, and walked away. I smiled at her back, and then came up with a plan – just jump to the tree, and climb down. I span round so I was facing the tree, and threw my bag onto it first. It landed, the handle hooking itself on a branch. I cracked my knuckles, and leapt.
I tried to leap.
I slipped.
I plummeted to the ground. I heard Zoey’s scream ring out into the night as I collided with the hard dirt, a few feet away from Vladimir. The world was fuzzy, and I could hear my heart beating loudly in my ears. The taste of metal was in my mouth – I spat it out, the blood spilling onto the floor. I saw the faint outline of Zoey appear over my head, asking frantically if I was ok, screaming my name repeatedly, and I suddenly felt exhausted. I let my eyelids flutter shut, darkness overcoming me as Zoey’s voice slowly grew fainter and fainter.
