Chapter 5

 “Alice?” A nudge instantly jerked me awake, I was actually sleeping while sitting up, with the noises of people in class no less. What is wrong with me?

 “Are you alright?” I glanced up to meet McKinley’s concerned blue eyes from the corner of my eyes I saw Daniel looking at me. But my focused changed as I stifled a yawn. I was truly embarrassed; I never fell asleep in class before. “Are you not sleeping well?” he asked.

 Oh I’m so sorry. I just feel tired.

“I see well try and get more sleep so you won’t miss out at school alright?” he said with a friendly smile as he pats my shoulder making me look up at him and nod like an idiot.

“Alright class I’ll need you to stop talking about town news for awhile and listen up” he said going to the front of the room and I sighed glad that any attention he drew to me would be taken away. I did noticed in every class so far today people had things to say about in the next city over women were collapsing from extreme fatigue or from sudden anemia with other reports of women waking up in strange places or in their house being extremely tired. With a town like Twinwood nearly any news is big news especially with teens.

“It’s the first week of October and Student Council want to try something new and hold a Halloween event and of course the Art classes will do the decorating” he said and of course people’s reactions alternated between a groan and a small level of curiosity and excitement. I of course was pretty neutral but his eyes locked on mine expectantly, McKinley knew how artistic I was so I would obviously be excited by this.

“Oh come on class, extra credit for those who help” he added and this got a few approvals, some people still didn’t look interested.

“So what’s the event going to be?” Daniel’s awesome voice sounded through the murmuring class. 

“That’s the thing, tomorrow morning the school will cast a vote and the winner should be announced at the end of the day. Those who are interested will have to meet with me after school so we can start thinking of how we will decorate” he said once again those framed blue eyes looked at me and I smiled back to show him I was interested which I knew he understood.

Suddenly the bell rung signaling the end of the day and kids started to leave and I packed up as well.

“Hold on a minute Alice, I need to have a talk with you” McKinley said stopping me in my tracks I turned to him and stopped as other kids passed me and headed out the door. He smiled just a little and his eyes told me that I wasn’t in any trouble, he probably was going to ask me about the art thing seeing I was known to stay after school and work on art projects last year.

I thought I saw a paper fly at my desk as I was shuffling papers to pack up slower seeing as I wasn’t going any time soon. I heard the door close soon as the last person left muffling the sounds of the kids outside.

“Relax, you aren’t in trouble” McKinley said stating what I already knew as he took a seat beside me. “I would like to ask how are you feeling?” he asked and I looked with surprise. “Everything that is occurring lately is happening in the next town and I want to make sure my students are alright, the target seems to be young females” he added.
