The Road

There is a long road,
In a valley,
That no one dares to take.
It's filled with bones and shards
And remnants of human mistakes.

The trees are always whispering,
Brambles do as they please,
And ghosts of long forgotten pasts
Pull at your sleeves.

Be careful of what you say -
For the wind will have its way.
Words come back to haunt you -
They'll choke you in revenge.

Light is no savior,
It's starker than night.
There is no hiding
When all is in sight.

Step cautiously,
Or the earth will have her way
She has the tendency
To pull people to their graves.

Your senses will fail you,
Your mind will dull.
The beasts of burden
Are out for a stroll.

Watch behind and to the sides,
There threats linger.
But, to the front
There is greater danger.

In the pit of the stomach
For those who walk this road
A hunger for eternity
Makes itself known.

But for most they seek,
Often without knowing,
Death at the hands of the cunning
Long road in a valley unknown.
