Since the Eras Tour had ended in November, Wren turned one in December, and the football season came to a devastating end in February, Taylor Swift felt like she couldn't catch a break. Of course, she hadn't seen the inside of a studio or the sketches of a costume in months, but that hardly felt equivalent to the mental load of motherhood.

After she'd come off the road, physically exhausted and longing for a three day nap, Wren had come down with the flu. Of course. Taylor had known sick babies were sad sights before her own daughter had fallen ill for the first time, but nothing could've truly prepared her for the hiccuping sobs of discomfort and the lethargic tiredness that kept curious little limbs pinned down. Her baby — who was still only just finding her light — had been completely snuffed out for a week and a half, and that felt like longer torture than two-and-a-half years on the road somehow.

When the last of lingering congestion had cleared from the Swift-Kelce household, because of course Travis caught it two days before Wren was fully functioning and curious again, they'd been swept up into the tsunami of birthday celebrations. Taylor hadn't even spared a thought to her own birthday, not sure when she would've found the time if she cared anyways. She'd put all of the energy she had between caring for Wren and Travis into planning a first birthday party, so when Abigail showed up on her door with four month old Bennett and a bag of baby snacks, Taylor hadn't had a clue what was going on.

She'd been led astray, made to think she and Travis were just attending a celebratory dinner and Abigail waiting back at the apartment was the surprise, but then the night had unraveled into pure sunshine and for a stretch of unbroken hours Taylor had been simply Taylor. Though the second she was back in the car heading home to Wren just slightly tipsy, she'd broken down like an avalanche about missing her baby. Typical.

Then two days later, they'd packed up and headed out to Philadelphia where Kylie and Jason had been more than generous to host Wren's party. That magical weekend had quickly turned into Christmas, and trips to Arrowhead, and then New Years, and the superbowl. It had been one thing after another after another, because once she'd gotten accustomed to the false hope of slowing down once Travis came home full time, Wren got sick again. This time it was a sinus infection and croup. This time Taylor was the one to be taken down just as it was clearing up.

Then they'd had the Grammy's, and it had felt good to be back in a working environment. Really good actually. Taylor had buzzed for days on a seemingly endless high, but it all came crashing down when Wren decided three am and four am and six am were great times to wake up screaming. Which had slowly but surely led them to this moment two months later.

"Hold on." Taylor's throat suddenly felt tight and dry. Her eyes felt wet, aggravated by thick tears that pooled along her bottom lashes. Each blink felt dangerous, like it might unravel her entirely. "What if it's too soon? I mean, it might not be the crib. She sleeps fine during nap time."

Time felt like it stood still inside the light yellow nursery. The walls that had been painted over a year ago now still looked bright and felt smooth beneath tired fingertips searching for the light switch at midnight. The rocking chair in the corner had definitely deflated some, but every stain of diaper cream and spit-up had been wiped away with affection even if exhaustion slowed Taylor's efforts every time. As she looked around the room, sitting on the cold hardwood floor, she felt like she was still living within the very first day of taking Wren in. Suddenly, Taylor wasn't so sure she was ready to let that go just yet.
