Consequences

When Michael returned to heaven, he was panting, almost on the edge of hyperventilating. Despite being gifted with superhuman speed and agility, Michael was still not fit enough to do any physical activity longer than twenty seconds. He couldn't believe he allowed Ashton to see him, let alone almost catch up to him. If he hadn't been fast enough then all hell would've broken loose, and that wasn't even figuratively. The number one rule for guardian angels was  to never be seen by the public eye. Even worse if the "public eye" meant someone you knew. But before Michael could think that far ahead, he reminded himself that he done a good thing. He had been able to save two humans, albeit ones he knew, which was what this business was all about wasn't it? And besides, no one had caught him anyway. At least that's what he convinced himself. Luke would be kicking his ass if he had. Speaking of which, that reminded him: Michael had to get back to the other boy. Michael had been missing for a while and if he didn't return soon, Luke would become suspicious of his whereabouts. The last thing he needed was a frantic Luke on his case asking him where he had been and with whom.

Michael strolled back to the house in search of Luke, but what he found instead was not what he'd expected. He thought he would've possibly come home to Luke pacing back and forth across the room, but instead, he found not only Luke but the Chief Commissioner and the High Consul speaking to his boyfriend across the dinner table as if they were all old friends.

"Hello?" Michael questioned. "What's going on here?"

"Something very important Michael, and it involves you, so I suggest you take a seat," the High Consul said, gesturing to the empty chair across the table.

Michael warily joined the trio at the table. He peered over at Luke to silently ask the question on the tip of his tongue, but all he got in return was a deep glare.

"What does this have to do with me?"

"Don't take us as fools, Michael," the Chief Commissioner began. "We see everything that goes on in heaven and on earth, and we have seen you aid your friends even though you know it is one of our greatest and oldest laws."

"I'm sorry Chief Commissioner, but there was no other way-"

"We have plenty of guardian angels laying around, Michael," the Commissioner interrupted. "There are no excuses for your actions."

"We don't have many rules here, but the most important one is to never been seen, especially by the people we know," the High Consul continued. "We wish we didn't have to do this, but you Michael, have broken the law and in turn, almost blown our cover. For this, we are sentencing you to Gabriel's Court."

"What!?" Michael exclaimed.

You were only ever summonsed to Gabriel's Court if you were in extreme violation of the law. Most angels who were sent there had been summonsed for demon relations or worse...Michael knew that if he was being put on trial in front of the governing council then he was going to face grave consequences for his actions.

"Your trial will begin tomorrow morning. I expect you will be on time or fear facing an even worse punishment than what you will be getting. That will be all gentlemen," the Chief Commissioner said.

And with those parting words, the couple were left to themselves. Michael turned to explain himself, but before he could even get one word out, Luke had risen from his chair and stormed off to their bedroom. Michael was in deep trouble.

Michael slumped in his chair, head in his hands, as he thought about what the Chief Commissioner had said. How could everything suddenly gone to garbage? He knew he would have to face Luke's wrath sooner or later, so he might as well get it over and done with now, he thought. He followed his boyfriend to their room and found the boy sitting on the edge of the bed. Michael could practically see the anger rolling off Luke in waves. When Luke heard him approach, he shifted his glare from the ceiling to Michael. If it were true that looks could kill, Michael would be a pile of ashes on the floor right about now.

"Why Michael? Why, after I specifically gave you clear instructions, did you go to Calum and Ashton?" Luke started. "Do you know what you've done? The council could strip you of your wings or worse, sentence you an eternity in hell! Do you know what that'll do to me? How that'll make me feel? Do you ever think of anyone other than yourself for once?" All those questions were fired at Michael at once. Each one filled with more anger than the last.

"I was thinking of my friends, Luke! What would've happened if I hadn't gone, huh? They would've died!"

"Then let them die! Everyone has a time Michael and maybe this was theres'."

"How could you even say that?"

"It's the truth, Michael! Some day they are going to die and this will all be for what? Nothing. That's right. You just risked your life, our relationship, for the inevitable. Think about that Michael while you wallow in your own pity."

Michael was left speechless. He and Luke had never argued before, nor had Luke raised his voice at him in such a way. This was a completely different side to Luke that he was seeing and if he were being honest, it scared him in a way he'd never experienced. Luke was never the type to be angry, so if this was how he felt now, then Michael had completely fucked up.

"You know what, Michael? Since you've got nothing more to say and you clearly don't care about this relationship the same way I do, I think it's best you sleep on the couch tonight. I can't even bare to look at you right now."

Michael knew Luke was right and so he didn't argue with the boy. He just nodded in response and exited the bedroom in search for the couch. He couldn't blame Luke for being angry, not even if he tried. Luke was right - Michael was selfish. He hadn't given a thought about Luke when he'd left today, nor did he consider how Luke's feelings would come into play if something were to happen to Michael. Now both boys were paying the price for Michael's mistake. Tomorrow would be a daunting and deciding day for couple. Michael would either be punished or he would be pardoned, but either way, both ended with the possibility of losing Luke. Michael didn't enjoy those odds. As he laid on the couch, staring out at the ceiling, he prayed that no matter what happened, Luke would find it in his heart to forgive him because without Luke, Michael had nothing left to hold him here.
