All good things must come to an end

Once Michael had eventually composed himself enough to lay Calum and Ashton to rest and destroy the remnants of the battle, the pair returned to the ethereal realm where chaos awaited them. Both boys were marched to the high court and placed on immediate trial for their defiance, misdemeanour, and in Michael's case, his treachery. Under normal circumstances, the unanimous verdict would be to strip the pair of their wings and sentence them to an eternity in the fires. However, the fact they had managed to dismantle the demons' malevolent plans and rid them of the mortal realm for good did give them the brownie points needed to stay within the gates. Instead, the pair earnt a couple more decades of servitude onto their records, and were subjected to a mandatory good behaviour bond of 15 years to be enacted immediately; not that Luke or Michael minded too much.

And so, both boys respectfully lived out the next 50 years of the guardian program side-by-side without any further complications. When the day came for the pair to be relieved of their duties, Michael and Luke felt bittersweet. On one hand, they were overjoyed and eager to finally enter the next chapter, but surprisingly, on the other, they each also felt slightly sad about saying their goodbyes, despite Harry and the others having moved on years before them. Michael and Luke's hands were slicked with nervous sweat and they had a little wobble in their step as they walked up to the red door that would transport them onto their final place.

"Do you think they're waiting for us there?" Michael voiced the question that had been looming over both boys' heads.

"There's only one way to find out."

The door opened, illuminating a light so fierce it evoked tiny tears in the corners of the eyes. Michael and Luke shared one final gaze, silently voicing their affirmations, before allowing the light to engulf them and carry them to their little piece of happily ever after.
