I woke from the best sleep I'd ever gotten, but was still on the verge of drifting off into sleep with the calming waves. The feeling was so familiar and felt like... home.
Vessel's chest rose and fell with each steady breath as I laid on him. We were tangled in the sheets, no clothes to be seen. For a moment, I watched as sunlight peaked through the curtains and danced over his bare skin. His face looked so relaxed with sleep, arm lain limp over the mattress under me as I was tucked in the crook of his arm. I couldn't help but to carefully raise a hand and move a lock of hair from his face.
I froze as he leaned minutely into my hand in his sleep, laying his jaw in my palm as he took in a slow breath, letting it out and falling back into a deep sleep. He was beautiful - long lashes kissing his cheek, lit slightly by the low blue glow his eyes gave off when he was dreaming.
My hand carefully slid down his neck and into the dip of his collarbones, trailing a finger down his chest as I settled back against him, eventually falling back asleep while breathing in the scent of him - listening to his steady heartbeat.
I next woke to the distant sound of the piano, blinking my eyes open to find my arm strewn across the empty space he had been. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I sat up, bringing the silk sheet with me to cover my naked body. My hair was a mess and I swiped it to the side, trying to tuck it behind my ear.
As I crawled out of bed, a small voice in my head wondered if he cared the way I did. After all, he had not returned the sentiment when I told him I loved him. Yet, he insisted I stay. Made me promise I would.
I brought the sheet with me as I descended the stairs, following the sound of music. Clutching the fabric of the sheet to my chest to keep it around me, I watched from the banister as he hummed along to a song that his fingers languidly played over the keys.
He was in long plaid pajama pants and I assumed that was all since he bore no other clothes that I could see. His hair was still a mess as he played in the sunlight, shades in the front room drawn back to bring in the warmth as he moved with the music just slightly.
It was a slow, beautiful song. He let the notes ring out as he hummed lowly, before slightly quickening the notes, letting his voice sound clearer over them.
"And we go beyond the farthest reaches, where the light bends and wraps beneath us. And I know as you collapse into me..."
Sensing me behind him, he lifted his hands and turned. I could have melted on the spot with the small smile that spread over his lips as he took me in.
"Hi." He murmured, turning to face me fully.
"Hi." I whispered back, a smile still on my face from watching him play.
His brow furrowed as he stood, "Did I wake you?"
"If you did, it was in the best way," I smirked a bit as he took slow steps toward me, taking in the sheet I had dragged with me. "It's a beautiful song. Is it on an album?"
He nodded, coming to stand in front of me, towering over me as his eyes roamed over my state fondly.
He seemed to consider something as his eyes went a little distant, hands coming up to run up and down my arms as if to warm me up. It reminded me of the day we had gone to the waterfall.
"I... wrote it after..." He tried, biting his bottom lip as if reconsidering what he wanted to say.
After another beat of silence, I whispered, "Play it for me."
A small smile crept up on his lips before he scoffed slightly, more of a small breath of air, and he took my hand to lead me to the couch behind the piano.
