Detective Thompson swung open the freezing, latched metal door, stepping inside with a sense of urgency that bordered on the unnatural. His every movement screamed of a high-stakes situation, the kind where lives hang in the balance, and every second counts. The weight of what had just transpired—the tragedy of Mr. Jones—was unmistakably present in the air, thick with tension. The stakes had never been higher.
Without hesitation, I followed in his wake, my instincts kicking in, as I always did by his side—through the chaos, the madness, the unrelenting pressure. We moved like soldiers heading into battle. He paused only when we reached that dreaded room—the one with the grotesquely designed chair that seemed to watch us as we approached. But we didn't enter that space today. No, today, we were headed somewhere far more serious. The interrogation room. It was time for the truth to come out.
Inside, the atmosphere was colder, suffocating, as if the walls themselves were pressing in, unwilling to let anyone breathe freely. Chief Stan was already there, flanked by two other Detectives whose sour faces spoke volumes. They didn't need to say a word; it was all there in their eyes—dark, stormy, and grim.
The Chief's gaze locked onto ours like a predator eyeing its prey, dissecting us in an instant. There was no escape from his intensity. Then, with a sweeping motion of his hand, he gestured toward the other Detectives, introducing them with an air of finality.
"This is Detective Fredrick Mutts and Detective Drew Augustine." His voice was steady, controlled, but there was an underlying force, a quiet command that made you pay attention. The names hung in the air, heavy with significance.
Mutts and Augustine. They were an odd pair, mismatched in a way that didn't sit right. Detective Mutts, for one, looked like he had just rolled out of a long, hard night. His athletic gear, worn and frayed, suggested he had given up trying to fit in with the polished world around him. He looked like a man who had lost his way—a far cry from the seasoned Detective he was supposed to be. The disarray in his appearance mirrored the chaos in his life, and I couldn't help but wonder what demons he was running from.
Then there was Detective Augustine. In stark contrast to Mutts, he looked every inch the part of a professional. His jet-black suit, sharp and formal, was a dead giveaway of his attempts to project authority. Yet the sleeves were too long—an odd flaw in a man who seemingly cared too much about his outward appearance to let something so simple slip by. His thin, wiry frame, tall and angular, only added to the feeling that he was trying too hard to be something he wasn't. It was as if he was playing dress-up, pretending to be someone more powerful, more confident, more in control than he truly felt.
Despite their differences, I could feel the undeniable pull of something darker between them. They weren't just here to fill seats; they were here for something far more important. And whatever that was, it was now staring all of us down, daring us to face it head-on.
Right there, right in the heart of the storm, lay another brown, brittle A4 file, its presence unsettling in the quiet of the room. But this one wasn't just another nameless document. No. This one had a label. RACHEL GREEN CASEFILE 1.The letters were sharp and deliberate, not a single one misspelled—an unsettling precision that hinted at the importance of what it contained.
"We believe she plays a crucial role in your investigation," Detective Augustine spoke first, his voice cold and commanding, as he pointed toward the file like it held some unspoken power over us.
Detective Mutts, a slight cough escaping his lips—a dry, gravelly sound—took over next. His voice was rough, the byproduct of too many cigarettes and too many sleepless nights. "Let us walk you through the details. We were the first on the scene... just the other day."
