Chapter seventeen

After we had been in the pool for almost three hours playing Marco polo we got out. The kids went and jumped on the trampoline to try off while I got in the shower.

I was about to turn off the water and get out of the shower when I felt the necklace around my neck start to get hot. It kept getting hotter until it felt like I had left it on a burning flame. I was almost in tears, it felt like it was burning my flesh. Quickly I riped it off and flung it across the room.

Scarred to see, I looked at my neck in the mirror. There was nothing there. Not even a red spot. Confused, I picked up the necklace to see if it was broken. The clip where it was supposed to hook and connect was gone. It must have gotten lost when I ripped the necklace off. I wasn't worried, I could fix it when I got home. I finished getting dressed and then went and carefully put the necklace in my bag.

I was still weirded out about what had happened, but I tried not to think much of it. I heard shylee yell at the kids to come in and take a bath. Miguel was taking his first so I decided to entertain dahlia to pass time. We were going to watch a series of Tom and Jerry in her room. As I was getting the movie she said, "Aunt Fang, what's wrong with you neck.?" I looked at her confused. "What do you mean 'what's wrong with my neck'?" she touched it in the exact spot that the necklace had been before it had burned me and said, "your neck, it looks like a burn only in the form of a necklace, like the one you were wearing when you first got here and we went swimming." confused, I went in the bathroom and looked where the necklace had been.

There was nothing there once again. "Dahlia. There's nothing there honey, are you sure you saw that?" she pointed at my neck and said "yes there is, it's right there don't you see it?" I looked again, still nothing. "okay dahlia, go watch tv, I'll be in there in a second.

I sat down on the side of the bathtub and sighed. I was so confused, but in my confusion, I knew, I just knew something was wrong.

A few minutes later Miguel came out of the bathroom in his mothers room. When he did I casualy asked, "Miguel, is there anything on my neck?", he looked confused and distracted and said "No?" and kept walking.

Something was very wrong, how is it that only dahlia could see the burn? Why couldn't I see it? I mean after all, it was on MY skin, shouldn't I be able to see it?
