• harley was married to carter sutton for four years prior to early season one, but their marriage after the first year was a bit of a disaster. her husband had a bit of a rough go at things so he became someone who wanted to control everything including his wife and he wanted things a certain way at all points. if not, he was verbally and on occasion physically abusive. she was planning to leave him in the end but one night she came home to their apartment in hell's kitchen and he was dead in their living room.
• her mother-in-law thinks she was responsible for the death of her husband because she was the one who found him and she was secretly leaving him. so she tries to essentially make it sound like she kílled him rather than what actually happened which is not true, of course, so when she meets matt one night at josie's bar she happens to be going on and on about her struggle to find a good lawyer for her side of the case who will actually take/understand her side. so he goes on to take the case for her with nelson & murdock which he ends up winning.
