She looked effortlessly beautiful,
Her aura young and truthful,

The words she spoke delicately, meaningful, they meant more to me than she'd ever know

I'd turn life into a perfect show for her

'This is rubbish, complete and absolute rubbish,' I thought to myself. Working on this particular English assignment made me struggle a lot yet I couldn't figure out why. I always knew that writing poems was not my cup of tea but struggling this much to create something barely presentable for class felt defeating. Then again, the version of me from last year would've just gone with my current draft but I had not been able to let it go yet. There was this want, an underlying need, in me to perfect this. I had always liked English as a subject and I did read from time to time as a leisure activity but I never got this frustrated over an assignment. Who did I want to impress? 'Just let it be for tonight. You can work on it again tomorrow,' I made a compromise with myself.

I tidied my desk before making my way downstairs to eat supper with my mum. Following the delicious smell hanging in the air, I made my way into the kitchen. "What are we having?" I asked, curiously peeking over my mum's shoulder. "Your favourite vegetable soup," she said. "That's great. Thank you for cooking Mum," I said excitedly before setting the table and sitting down at it to patiently wait until the soup was fully done cooking.

Sitting down with me my mum began asking me about my day, "Did you finish all your homework for tonight?" "Technically not but I don't think I'll get any further with my poem tonight. Stupid English assignment," I answered her, muttering the last part. "Abbey, I'm sure the assignment is not stupid. I understand you're frustrated but give it some more time. You can't be good at everything the first time you try it," my mum half-heartedly scolded me. "You're right mum, you're right," I agreed quietly.

After finishing, I thanked my mum once again before going back up the stairs and into my room. Immediately, without me even wanting to, my thoughts drifted back to the English assignment. 'Why not give it another try?' I asked myself. I should be able to write a poem on the topic of love and romantic feelings, basically a cheesy and corny text. At least I tried convincing myself of that as I looked over the poem once more.

An hour later and I was still sitting at my desk trying my best to figure out a way to make this poem a little less horrible but the words did not seem to come to me. My head was a complete void. I was staring at the words, endlessly, and nothing seemed to make sense anymore. Therefore I had to do the inevitable and ask someone for help which I had always hated doing. Cherry on top, I had to ask not just someone but my teacher.

Hi Miss Morrison,

Apologies for contacting you at this late hour. I am currently working on the poem you gave us as homework and seem to be stuck. I therefore wanted to ask if you could have a look at it during break time tomorrow and give me some advice. I'd be really grateful if you did.

I wish you a good night,
Abbey Williams

Immediately after hitting send, a surge of nervousness flooded through my body. I couldn't tell where the sudden nerves were coming from but what I did know was that I was incredibly excited for the next day now.

When I checked my phone for the first time the following morning I was on my way to school already. I had been nervously excited the whole time while getting ready. Deep down I longed to have an answer from Ms. Morrison. Checking my inbox I saw a new notification:
