I don’t know how long I sit there, staring at my trembling fingers entwined with his. The weight of memories I spent years burying is pressing against my ribs, suffocating, breaking me apart piece by piece.

And Ambhreen—he just watches.

He doesn’t rush me.
Doesn’t mock my silence.

He just holds my hand, steady and warm.

I take a shaky breath, my voice coming out fragile—so unlike me.

"When I was in first grade--" I begin, my eyes unfocused, lost in a time so far away yet still clawing at me.
Ambhreen held my hand assuring comfort.

"I met him in school. Tush. He was my first best friend. My first-- everything."

A ghost of a smile flickers at my lips, but it vanishes just as quickly.

"I never knew the world without him. Not until the day he left."

I hear Ambhreen exhale softly, but he doesn’t speak.
He’s letting me unravel.

"He was different," I continue, my voice quieter now. "A kid who had all the girls swooning over him, but he never cared. He’d stick to me all day, no matter how many of them tried to get his attention. He was stubborn like that."

I swallow hard.

"And they hated me for it."

The words taste bitter. I feel my nails digging into my palm, but Ambhreen tightens his hold on my hand—like a silent reminder that I’m not alone here.

"They taunted me, called me names, turned my childhood into a nightmare. But I never cared, because he was there. With me. Always."

A tear slips down my cheek. I don’t wipe it.

"Then, when I finished fifth grade, everything ended. Just like that. I walked into school one day, and he was gone. No goodbye. No explanation. Just.. gone."

I let out a shaky laugh, hollow and broken.

"I waited for years. Prayed for years. And then, in eleventh grade, I met you.. "

His hand suddenly felt cold .
The time when we first met.. So memorable and painful.

Flicker of guilt was visible in his eyes for the times he hurted me .

" I finally found out where he was. After I had my contacts with you ended. "

Ambhreen tenses slightly beside me, but he doesn’t interrupt.

I shut my eyes, the pain burning too deep.

"And guess what? He was with them. The same girls who ruined my childhood. The ones who called me names, who made me miserable. And he—"
