Chapter 3
Alicia arrived not much after that. I brought the package inside. Alicia and I opened it together. We were a little skeptical about opening the package. We didn't exactly get along with mom and dad they weren't very good influences.
They were drunk most of the time and when we were only thirteen Alicia and I vowed that we would never drink alcohol because we never wanted to end up like our parents.
They say that they're sober now but I'm not convinced so we try to keep our distance. Getting a package from them was really strange. We haven't seen or talked to them in five years. The last time we saw them was when we were 17.
Alicia and I both sit on the couch. Alicia has a pair of scissors in her hand."Can I open it?" I ask.
"No your not allowed to use a knife you're too young." She says
"You're only an hour older than me!" I protest.
"I remember when I was your age."
"Of course you remember. It was an hour ago." I sass
"I'll open it." Alicia says. She glides the box cutter down the piece of tape through the tape that was sealing the box and pulls up the two flaps of the box. She and I look inside. Inside the box are round chips that look like poker chips. They have the letters AA on the top and each one of them has a certain number of days on it. For instance 1 day, 2 days, 3 days. There are so many. Exactly one for each day that they were sober. Inside there is also a letter that reads:
Dear Mikayla & Alicia,
We know that we can never make up for what we did in the past, but we would like to contribute to what happens in the future. We know we don't know you very well because we weren't sober most of the time but we would like to get to know you now. We would like to invite you to our house on Saturday August 6th. If you don't want to come we understand, but we would be thrilled if you did.
Sincerely,
Mum & dad"What do you think Kayla? Do you want to go?" Alicia asks me.
"I don't know. I just don't want to get hurt again like when we were 17." I reply
"I think we should at least go once and if you feel uncomfortable we don't have to go again. But if you really don't want to go, I can go by myself."
"I think I want to have Chandler and Greyson come with us in case if something bad happens."
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea... But I mean Greyson and I have only been dating for 2 weeks and it would be like him and I were both meeting our parents for the first time..."
"True, but he'll protect you. He's so sweet and he would protect you from anything, even our drunk ass parents."
"Kayla... What if they're disappointed in me..."
"How would they be Licia?"
"What if they wanted me to be a doctor, or a lawyer... I'm just college student who works at Starbucks..."
"Well, at least we're not alcoholics, and they can't possibly be disappointed because you're only in college working a small job for now; but when we graduate you'll get a better job." I say.
"So we're going?" Alicia asks.
"I guess. But I'm telling Chandler that
if I end up crying, he's staying the night.""Fair enough. I'm going to go call Greyson." Alicia replies.
"Ok. I'll call Chandler."
