"This isn't funny anymore," he barks. "You need to stop disappearing like this. This is the third time this week." Glancing up from the table, I give him a questioning look.

"What?" I ask, watching him put his coffee down.

"Where do you keep going anyway?"

"What do you mean?"

"Are you seeing someone else?"

"How could you even say that, Alec?" I snap, my eyes glaring at him.

"Because you're always disappearing and it makes me think the worst."

"I'm not cheating on you," I reply, getting out of my chair and walking over to him, sitting down on his lap and looking at him dead in the eyes. "I would never cheat on you."

"Okay," he sighs, kissing my forehead as I continue to pick the pink nail polish off my nails. "What are you doing?"

"For some reason I have this pink nail polish on. Did you do it as some sort of a prank?"

"No," he laughs. "I know you hate the color."

"Weird," I mumble.

Later that day, Alec had to go to another meeting, leaving me home alone with Max and Haru. A sigh left my mouth, being bored out of my mind when a harsh knock was delivered to the front door. My stomach dropped and my blood ran cold when the knocking stopped; me being that only person here since the guards went away with Alec.

Silently, I got off the couch and walked to the front door where the banging had come from. Through the peak hole, I saw a ticked looking man with something in his hand that resembled a knife. I could feel my face go pale, turning snow white in seconds as the man tapped his foot impatiently. Behind me, Max barked loudly, trying to warn someone that something bad was about to happen.

"I can hear you in there!" The man yelled, banging on the door again.

"May I help you?" my voice came out squeaking as tears brimmed in my eyes.

"Open the door now!" he demanded, still banging on the door.

"What do you want?"

"I want to speak to the king!"

"He's not here right now," I reply, regretting what I said right as it left my mouth. "What can I do for you?"

"Open the door!"

My heart raced as I walked away from the vibrating door. Max continued to bark as I dial Alec's phone, scared out of my wits as scenarios ran through my head of what could happen if the man gets into the house. I get voicemail after two rings and I curse his silently, dialing his number. He ignores my call again the second time and I try once more, silently praying he picks up this time.

"What?" he snapped. "You know I'm at a meeting."

"There's some guy at the door," I whispered, fear laced into my voice. "He's banging and demands to be let in and it looks like he has a knife in his head."

"Not funny," he replies.

"I'm serious, Alec," I respond. "I know last time I was joking just to get you home but this time I'm not; listen." I hold the phone towards the barking and banging and I hear him start talking.

"-room and lock the door. I'll be there in five minutes."

"He says he wants to talk to you," I whisper.

"Lacey," he growls. "Go into the room and lock the door. I'll be there soon." I hang up seconds later and head towards our room, snatching the kitten along with me but leaving Max so it seems like I'm still in the room.

The banging could still be heard when I locked the bedroom door. My heart raced as Max's barks stopped and fear took over my body. I knew that man had gotten inside the house when there was a loud bang, almost like a crashing sound coming from downstairs. Silence lingered in the air, and quietly; I walked into our closet and sat in the corner, praying that the hanging clothes would cover my body.

There was silence. That's all you could hear. It almost mocked me, laughing in my face as my heart raced faster. I knew that Alec wasn't going to be able to save me when I heard out bedroom door smack against the wall. There were muffled words said by the intruder. Footsteps got louder, walking closer to my hiding spot as I clung to the poor kitten in my arms, making me look like an innocent child. The door swung open and I ducked my head down and squeezed my eyes together, making the world go black as the person drew closer to me.

"Out of all the times you could disappear, you choose now not to," a calm voice said and my eyes snapped open. Within seconds of being on the ground, I was in Alec's arms, clutching him for dear life as I sobbed.

"It was some drunk at our door," he explains as I take a sip of the tea in my hands. "His father used to be one of my guards and was killed years due to fighting an attack we had. I guess he wanted revenge."

"I thought you had people at the gates for this kind of reason."

"Both called out sick. I wasn't informed till after you called."

"Please don't leave again," I whisper, fear raking my body still.

"I won't," he promises, wrapping his arms around my torso tighter. "Did you ever get that nail polish off?"

"Thankfully yes but still don't know how it got on. You swear you didn't put it on me while I was sleeping?"

"I didn't! Swear to the Gods up above. I don't like it when we fight, so why would I do that to you?"

"No clue."

"So then calm down and don't blame me."

"You're leaving again?"

"Yes," he nods his head. "I'll be gone for three days."

"You're seriously leaving after what happened yesterday?"

"Yes. I've had this planned for almost three months now; don't except me to drop everything because you got a little scared."

"You're horrible. That guy wanted to break in and hurt me, Alec. What if he has siblings who want to do the same thing?"

"I've already sent people over to his house. They're searching it for weapons and are staying there till i return."

A small sigh leaves my house as I watch him finish packing his bags. Haru jumps up, purring before curling up on top of his black shirt. A small groan leaves Alec's mouth as he swats the cat away with a pair of socks, causing the couple month old kitten to pounce into my lap and pass out seconds later.
