"Good morning familia!' I say as I hop down each step. Today will be a good day. I won't let it be a bad day. I'm going to take my Lacie out this morning, if she is up to it. "Mom do you have that picnic stuff I found last night?" I ask and start pulling things out of the fridge. I wasn't taking her outside for the picnic,as it was way to cold. I was taking her to the aquarium to eat under the shark dome. I throw all the stuff in the basket and grab some juice. I know, I just woke up. It's noon. Yes, I should be going to pick her up now. It didn't take me very long to get dressed and fix myself. Hey, I'm a guy. I take all the stuff out to my car and get in. Driving, I really don't like driving by myself. It's really boring. I have no one to talk to anymore in the car to talk to. I take the back roads today for I could floor it. The roads weren't bad so I should be fine. "My hearts a stereo, it beats for you so listen close." I sing along with the radio, what else is there to do? I slam on the breaks as I pass the road I was suppose to take. "Craaaap." I mumble. I throw my car into reverse and quickly back up, making it to my road. "I'm coming Lace," I race down her road. Without fully slowing down much I spin into her driveway and jump out. I admit, I'm in a good mood today. I don't know why. It wasn't that warm or sunny or anything. I just woke up on the right side of the bed I guess. "Hey Lawrence." I say as he comes outside. "Where's your sister? She awake yet? Is she feeling a bit better than yesterday night? She wasn't well then."
"Um Liam..." He says with his head down.
"What's wrong? What happened to her? Is she okay? Is something wrong? Oh my. Please tell me." I practically beg with my hands grasping his shoulders. My heart sunk deep down into my stomach. "Please, again. I need to know this." There was something wrong, I knew that just by the way he didn't answer me.
"The ambulance came and got her last night." He still says quietly.
"Is she okay?" I ask and dig through my stomach to find the strength not to cry. I couldn't cry in front of this eight year old.
"I don't know." He's so quiet I struggle to hear him. "Liam I'm scared." I pull him into a hug.
"Me too..." I tighten my face, causing the tear to fall down my face onto his shirt. "Are you home alone?"
"Yes..." He answers.
"Do you want me to stay with you?" I ask and he shakes his head. Why do they think they can leave him home like this? He's only eight. He can't do much here! What if he needs something. "Are you sure?" I try to say again. He still refuses.
"Go to the hospital, I need to you see if she's okay. I'm really scared. Last night she was talking about how she wanted to die. She hates the suffering. She wants to give up Liam. Can you please talk her out of it? I want to talk to her some more. She's my big sister. Please." I nod and stand back up again. "Right away."
"I will, I promise. When I get there and she's okay I'll call you. Deal?" I shake his hand and head over to my car. "Now you get back in the house and you lock the door, ya hear?" He nods and heads in. I get back in my car and head out. I see his little wave and smile back.
Please don't take her yet. I need her to be here. I can't manage to call Lawrence with bad news. I can't do that. Please give me good news. Please have her be okay. She doesn't have to be perfect, just don't let her die! Not yet. We're not done yet. She can't leave. Please don't take her away from me yet. I'm not ready yet.
The tears streamed down my face the whole ride to the hospital. To the point where I had to pull over. Please let her be okay. I said again. I finally gather enough to get back on the road. I head down the last road and I can see the hospital in the distance already. I took it a little slower than I should. When I finally pulled in, I took the parking spot the farthest from the building and slowly got out. I took short steps to the building and the automatic doors opened for me. The hospital stench insantly hit me. It burned as I took a deep breath, not letting a tear fall.
"Hello, may I help you?" The lady behind the desk asked me as I stood there. "Hello?" She asked again. Just the fear of getting up to see her was putting me in shock. I was in this bubble. Everything around me was moving at regular pace, but everything inside the bubble, just myself, was slowed to the minimum. I couldn't move any faster. Just the way my eyes looked at things. I wasn't noticing anything like I usually do. Everything was dull. It seemed like it was all in black and white. "Do you need medical attention?"
"No, sorry... I'm just looking for Miss Lacie Greene." I speak slow again.
"Oh yes, she's up on the third floor, room 2-A." She answers and I nod. I head over to the elevator and press all the little three button. I rode alone, thankfully. It felt like forever.
'Cancer Center - Right' The little sign read, just on the outside of the elevator. I found the A wing and head down the hall. There's her door...Her name sat on her door in official, hospital like writing. I stood there for a moment, just out of few. Alright Liam, enter the door. I took a deep breath. Be ready to expect the worse, kay? I turned and stepped through the door and finally saw her. Sleeping. Her heart moniter was beating like it should. She was alive. The room was empty, with just her of course. I took the chair next to her bed and sat down. I rested my head in my palms, elbows on my knees
Thank you. Thanks for keeping her here.I don't know how... to say it enough. Just thank you. Thanks for noticing she had more to give. More time to live.
I looked back at her and she was still quiet. Her short hair sitting across her face, her fingers moving just slightly. I put my hand up and rested it next to hers.
"Liam?" She said and I looked back up. "When did you get here?"
"About five minutes ago." I answered and looked over at the hanging clock.
"Alright, what should we do?" She looked around.
"We don't have to do anything, you can go back to sleep. I'll just stay here with you." i smile.
'Hey mum, would you bring my box of Disney movies over.' I send her a quick text. Within minutes she's here. Apparently she was on her way out to work and grabbed them before she left.
"Thanks." I said as she walked out. "Where should we start?" I ask as I open the box and set it next to Lacie on her bed.
"Beauty and The Beast." She pulls it out. Yes, I do have all the princess movies. They're mostly not mine. Just my sisters when they were younger and they some how got in my box.
"Alright." I take it out of its case and slip it into the VCR player. Yes I still have tapes.
"Thank you for coming." She says and I hand her the phone to call her brother. They talk for about ten minutes.
Throughout the day, we watch all the classic princess movies and Finding Nemo. She sleeps through most of them; I occasionally dozed off a couple times. I would just keep putting different movies in and watch them by myself. The only one she almost stayed up for was The Little Mermaid, her favorite. I was planning on staying the night with her tonight so I was now changing in the bathroom to a pair of sweats. I head back out to a already sleeping Lace and sit back down in the chair. I close my eyes and try to sleep again, but not without saying one last thing. Again Thank You. So much.
