And they would have a lot sooner, if Beth wasn't so anal. The junior cert wasn't coming up for months, and Beth was pretty smart, so she didn't really have anything to worry about. But she wanted her grades to be perfect, so if she wasn't at school, copiously taking notes, then she was at home studying.
It was kind of sad.
"Come on Beth. You know you're going to pass. If you really want to study, can't you do it when the exam is actually near?" Kai asked her friend at lunch. They had left the school and walked down with a group of their friends to their favourite hangout spot; The Library. There was a shop just round the corner, and they would all buy things there and go on the computers. Earlier that year, Beth and Kai discovered that they were the only ones who actually owned library cards.
And then one day, Kai came across a piece of information that changed everything.
"Hey Beth?" Kai asked with a large grin on her face.
"Yes?" She asked apprehensively.
"Do you want to start auditioning people for the band today?"
"Oh Kai I can't, I've got a lot of..."
"Did you know Jack can play an instrument?" Beth looked up. Kai smiled. "I'm sure he'd love to audition," she smirked.
"Well, it couldn't help to just hear a few people..." Beth said, grinning.
"Oh yes, of course," Kai said sarcastically.
"Shut up. Now help me figure out what to wear."
* * * * * * *
Five days later, after they had covered the town in posters advertising the auditions, they sat down in Kai's garage.
"Do you think anyone will show up?" Beth asked nervously.
Jack walked into the garage, holding a battered-looking guitar case.
"Hey Jack, I didn't know you played an instrument," Kai grinned. Beth shot her a look. She kept grinning.
"Well anyways, good luck," Beth smiled. Jack set took out his guitar, and began to play.
He was good. Very good. His audition piece was "Hey There Delilah", and he sang along in a deep, handsome tone. Kai passed Beth a note. "If you're sure you don't like him..." It read. Beth glared at her.
The strange thing was, Jack hardly looked away from Beth the entire time he was playing, and Beth couldn't stop looking at him. Strange.
He played the last few chords, and Beth jumped out of her seat. "You're in!" She exclaimed, blushing.
"Yes!" He yelled, punching the air. They looked at each other, then looked away, suddenly embarrassed.
Kai shook her head. Kids.
They saw a few more people that day, but nobody matched up to Jack, so they postponed the rest of the auditions to the following day. Beth went inside to get a drink of water, and Kai was left inside to daydream about "The Buskers" - The name they had decided on - and it's rise to fame. Which, she had decided, was imminent. "Soon", she thought to herself, "Soon they would be a real band."
And then he walked in, and things got complicated.
