God of Death

The house was surprisingly empty when I finished checking if anyone was there. I headed upstairs to my room once I finished, and threw my bag on my bed. The notebook slid out and fell on the floor, catching my attention. I furrowed my brow and slowly made my way to pick it up.

"Maybe I should study.." I murmured to myself, flipping to the first page. I blinked, surprised. There, on the first page was something written down. On the top was the words How To Use and below that was what looked like a rule.

I cleared my throat and began to read it out loud to myself. "The human whose name is written in this note shall die. This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected. If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack. After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds."

I blinked and gripped the notebook in my hands. "What? This is ridiculous." I mumbled. "I guess I won't be using this after all. What moron would write something like that in a perfectly fine noteb-" I paused and closed the notebook. Is that why it's..

"Hm.. It is called Death Note.. But this can't really kill anyone. That's crazy.." I tossed the notebook inside the trash bin and sat down at my computer. "I could've just torn the page off but the cover is what bothers me. Oh well, I'll have Sayu give me a spare notebook."

I turned on my television and flipped through the channel. That's when I remembered about that guy my dad was talking about this morning. Absentmindedly, I changed it to the channel news. Maybe they already caught him? Hopefully they did.
I watched, hoping they would get to the guy and they did.

"It looks like we finally have an identity of the male from yesterday's robbery. His name is Hector Walter and it looks like he's an American." The reporter stated. I quickly glued my eyes on the picture of the male to the right. He was muscular and his facial expression was cold, but more to something bleak.

"So that's the guy.. He doesn't seem too smart, judging by the fact that he is an American who suddenly decided to rob a Japanese bank. He won't get far. They'll catch hi--" I paused, slowly turning my head toward the trash bin. What if..

I stood up, walking over to retrieve the notebook. "What if.. I get to him first? What if this thing really works? There's only one way to know.." I made myself back to my desk and sat down.  "And that's to test it. Hm.. Hector? Let's see if this works."

I picked up a pencil and stared at the picture of the man. "It said I needed to know the face of the person and their name.. Check." With that, I slowly wrote down his name.  My palms grew sweaty and I set the pencil down when I finished. There.

"LIIGHT!"

I jumped at the sound of Sayu and her knocking, and my heart skipped a beat. "What?" I called out, regaining my composure and wiping my sweaty palms on my pant leg. Why am I nervous? There's no way it would work. I was simply testing it.

"Help us unpack the groceries!" She called back out as she ran downstairs. I let out a sigh and closed the notebook. After staring at it for some time, I got up and headed downstairs to help. Mom was struggling to come inside with both three bags of groceries. I quickly walked over and took them from her. "I got them." I murmured, and she smiled in relief and walked back out.

"OOO! Mom got me pocky!" Sayu squealed, jumping up and down in delight. "I'll give you some, Light. That is.. after you do my homework!" She giggled. I rolled my eyes and unpacked everything. As I did so, I noticed Mom got some potato chips. I smiled to myself and put them up.
