I'm immersed in an LDShadowLady video. I'm focusing all my attention on the screen. Yammy and Annie were screeching as Mitty killed them. I giggle as Lizzie transforms into a chicken and blabbed about her chicken brethren and random stuff like that.

I don't care about the breakfast bell until Mrs. Abbot quickly pokes her head in telling me not to be late, that I needed food, and that tomorrow a couple would show up to adopt someone. She rushes out at the sound of a child's cries.

I sigh and toss on a purple camisole with some white shorts. I throw my hair into a messy ponytail, not even bothering to brush it. I put on some chapstick to quench the throbbing of the cut on my lip, then lightly apply some concealer to cover up my pimples and blemishes.

I look up and blow my bangs out of my face. I slowly crawl out through the door, metaphorically speaking; then walk down to the to the lower half of the building. I sit down next to some girls who look like they could be friendly, and they try to strike up some kind of conversation with me. I ignore them while I sit eating my pancakes.

I see a blonde girl waving me over from the corner of my eye.

"Hey, sorry, my friend is waving me over. Nice knowing you!" I say to the girls. They don't notice. I pick up my tray and walk to where the blonde girl is sitting. She starts to talk, and I discover that her name is Brooklyn. We make very good friends, and she declares us "BFFs." I mean sure, whatever.

She comes into my room and we flop onto my bunkbed. (The top bunk, of course.) I don't mean to complain, but she's a bit too talkative for me. She's instantly drawn to YouTube, so I show her my favorites. She doesn't have any technology- laptop, phone, tablet. Basically she has no connection to the outside world.

We stay in my room until lunch, where we have to go to the cafeteria. We each pick something from the large array of sandwiches and meats, then find an uninhabitated table in the corner. We begin talking, and it gets pretty deep.

"Umm, Ashley? I know this is kind of a harsh subject for you, but, how did you get here?" Brooklyn asks. My eyes go misty and I stare off into space, the nurses words echoing around my skull like it's a cavern. I tear away from my flashback and lightly shake my head.

"Um, it was a fire.. Or something like that." My eyes tear up thinking about my little sister, and my mum, and my dad. Brooklyn looks ashamed at herself.

"I... I'm really sorry Ashley. It must have been really hard on you. I was left here, as a baby. I didn't even know what my mum looked like..." I immediately start thinking of ways to comfort her.

I decide we should go to her room instead of mine. I quickly pick up my laptop and we hop on her bed; we watch more LDShadowLady until it's time for dinner. It's steak. Brooklyn and I decide that we can sit together tonight, and talk in the morning.

I cut my steak with a stupid determined look on my face, which sends both me and Brooklyn into a hysterical laughing, giggling fit. That night I stare up at the wooden top bunk. I have a friend after three years of being here. I fall into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of my new best friend.
