It's been twelve years since the seventy-fifth Hunger Games. A lot has changed since then. There is no more Hunger Games, but the government has come up with another punishment for the rebelion.
Every year at a reaping, twelve boys are chosen between the ages of four and eighteen to be trained and put on the front lines of any current war. If they survive past ten years, they are allowed to go back home to their families. Also, five girls are chosen every other year between the ages of ten and nineteen to train and be nurses in dangerous war zones. If they are alive after five years of service, they get to go home. No volunteers allowed!
Katniss and Peeta are married and have two kids now. Their daughter, Poppy is eleven years old and their son, Nick is seven years old. Katniss is scared about this year's reaping where they choose both boys and girls. Peeta is trying to have hope, but secretly he is scared too. It isn't as bad as the Hunger Games, but if their kids are chosen they miss five to ten years of their childhood. Plus there is always the chance that they die. For these reasons, Katniss and Peeta have a lot to be worried about. Poppy and Nick don't understand their patents' fear, but they don't know the half of it.
