if this topic sounds familiar, it's because i accidentally deleted this chapter a few months back while scrolling through my drafts... allow me to put on my clown shoes as i attempt to re-write what i said at the time.
it seems more fitting now, because i watched the 1995 version of jane austen's persuasion the other day — i liked it enough, but i still feel like we are lacking a REALLY good film version of this story.
the 2005 pride & prejudice is very close to my heart, and i actually think the joe wright treatment would work really well with persuasion. i feel this even more after having recently watched atonement. the cinematography and the focus on the little intimacies would be superb. and that big cinematic feeling would fit persuasion so well — imagine huge sweeping shots of the ocean, crashing waves on the shore, to symbolise the yearning between anne and wentworth?? wide shots of her staring out at the sea which will always be symbolic of him??
as for casting, i have a few ideas in my head. i pictured ellise chappell while reading, having seen some of her in poldark, she could nail the quietness and lack of confidence anne has at first, but with quick wit and wisdom underneath. she also has the face for any period drama tbh!!
as for wentworth, my heart says alfred enoch. i feel like he has a rugged quality that could fit a man that's been in the navy, and would show that line between being hurt and longing for anne after all these years 🥺🥺 (also i remember there was a version with joel fry and sarah snook that didn't end up happening, and honestly i could see him as wentworth too?)
about the 1995 version, i did genuinely like it! i often find the old BBC dramatisations rather sleepy, but certain scenes made it all worthwhile. ciaran hinds as wentworth was *chef's kiss*, as was the chemistry with amanda root's anne, and sophie thompson's role as mary was also very entertaining.
anyway, that's all my blabbering done... just had to return with my jane austen fixation 💞 i just think persuasion has SO much potential to be a fantastic adaptation. the longing and yearning, with a slightly quieter/maturer view on love. purely looking at the books, it is arguably my favourite of all the love stories, very closely followed or tied with lizzie and darcy.
