Berwald POV

Why does he always do this? Shatter my heart with innocent smiles and hugs? The thing he does the most is hurt me inside, but I'll never let him know. I care about him too much.

Whenever he smiles, it makes my heart soar. Whenever he looks at me with those bright azure-violet eyes of his, my heart just about stops. Whenever he greets me with a simple "Hello" and a hug, I feel like a thousand butterflies rise up in my stomach.

But I know his smiles are forced sometimes.
After all, I'm a monster.

When I got into a fight with Matthias and almost killed him, Tino was watching from the doorway, eyes widened and filled with fear. After that, his fear-filled eyes snapped me back to reality and I released Matthias in a flash. Those eyes have haunted me ever since.

He avoided me that week, choosing instead to tend Matthias's wounds. My guilt got the best of me, so I ran.

I ran from those eyes and my guilt. An hour later, I had faintly heard my name off in the distance. I couldn't make out who it was. I didn't answer. Thinking to myself, I came up with a plan: I would be gone soon. He wouldn't have to continue living in fear anymore. I would protect him from myself.

Two weeks later, I executed my plan. I told everyone that I'd be out, being as vague as possible. Silently moving through the shadows, I made it into the house and crept up to my room. I grabbed a small bag from my closet, and began putting basic necessities in it. Another change of clothes, a few bottles of water and some granola bars all went inside the bag, along with a first-aid kit and a compass. I was about to leave when I remembered to do something. I quickly grabbed a pen and a sheet of paper, and wrote a small message. Well, if anyone bothered to look, that is.

Sighing sadly, I put the note on my neatly made bed so it'd be visible. I opened the window quietly without a squeak. There was a tree under it, so I'd be able to climb down and make my escape.

Suddenly, soft footsteps could be heard outside my voice, along with a soft voice.

"Berwald, are you there?"

I had to leave. NOW. The doorknob wiggled a bit, and I jumped outside. I landed on the tree perfectly and started climbing down. As soon as I reached the ground, I ran.

I ran as fast as I could until I reached a nearby forest. Looking back at the house, I softly whispered

"Goodbye, Tino"

And I  disappeared into the shadows of night.
