Chapter 4

John’s POV

“Then you don’t go to the pub,” I tease Ethan. Actually, that isn’t teasing, I mean it. He always says he’ll never tell anyone but we have encountered several serious dangers because of him, speaking out our secrets. This time is really important and we cannot afford any fatal mistakes. We have to find the queen in time, and honestly, I don’t have any ideas how to find someone who hasn’t shown a shadow for 18 years in just 10 days.

“What! No way! No way I’m……..”

I don’t hear the rest he is saying. I hear him mumbling and Gabriel teasing him, but I don’t exactly hear what they are talking about. I was looking at my father, who is sitting alone and silent on the chair, besides the marble writing table. He put his head on his hand, staring at the bookshelves. But I am pretty sure it’s not the books he is looking. He is thinking.

As I hear Ethan slamming the door, I walked to him,

“Father, I’m leaving tonight,” It isn’t that I do whatever I like and I tell him. It’s more like asking permission. I do respect my father a lot. He is the one who has guided me to reach this position. He was my teacher, brother, listener and everything. If it wasn’t for the unforgiveable mistake I have made, he would still be my best man.

“Do whatever you like, that’s not my business,” he replied coldly and walked out of the room. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting him to be kind. I knew that he would say like this, but it still hurts me, like every time he said.

Gabriel compliments me,

“Don’t worry. He’s just confused at this moment,”

Right, he might really be confused, I think. He might be worried about the execution.

“Oh, you stupid little creep, you should have known that this is not the time for father-son relationship. This is the time to fight for the country. So, suit yourself, solider,” I remind myself as though my father talks to me.

Gabriel continued “So, hmmm….. Take care and be back soon.”

“I will,” I gave her a warm smile, then I headed to the stable to check my friend, ‘Hunter’

“Boy, you are looking good today. Prepare yourself, buddy. We have to run miles today. Here’s your apple,” I treat him an apple and pat his back gently. Hunter has been my best pal for years. The battles, he and I fought together are uncountable. We really make a good pair.

While I am in my thoughts, a castle guard stands before me.

“Sir, Lady Gabriel asked to give you this.”

He handed me a letter. “Thank you solider,” I opened the letter and read,

“Use the shortcut way across the Diamond River. Sir Arthur told me that he’ll keep Lord Pegason’s eyes on him. He has already left the castle. With his rate and the path he uses, I believe he will be at the Magicians’ castle by the time you reach. Good luck.”

I sat down on the bench near me, thinking how precise my father has been. After all, he still cares about me and it feels heart-warming. I’m glad that he isn’t so cross with me.

“Ok, Hunter. It’s time, my boy. Let’s go,” I give a strong glance at him, as if a determination that I am not going to fail my father. I believe that he has done all this because he wanted me to be safe, and that’s what I am going to be.

I prepare to set off as the clock is ticking near midnight. I pack some food for me and Hunter. As the moon rise, I begin my journey to the Magicians’ castle. I saw Gabriel, watching me from her balcony as I turned my horse. I wave at her and head to the castle’s gate. I don’t want to waste any more time as the only days left is 9, when the midnight passes.
