If there was one thing I could count on in this life-besides Avi showing up exactly 8 minutes early to everything-it was that my friends would make an absolute spectacle of my personal life.
Especially when it involved Tyler Crosby.
"Do you think he'd wear a sherwani at the wedding or a tux?" Avi asked, as if we were deep into actual wedding planning. He was reclined on one of the floor cushions in Neil's living room, sipping chai with a level of dramatic flair that should be illegal before noon.
Neil, propped up against the sofa with his leg in a brace and a pile of pillows behind him, nodded solemnly. "I'd like a goat in the dowry. Maybe two."
"I cannot believe this is my life," I mumbled into the masala chai I'd been handed the moment I walked into Neil's house that morning.
And just when I think I might escape the public shaming...
Tyler strolled into the living room, looking effortlessly smug in his hoodie and post-game glow, carrying a plate stacked with jalebis like he'd been part of this friend group for years.
"She tell you guys about the proposal?" he asked, dropping down next to me on the floor with infuriating confidence.
I bury my face in my hands. "I'm transferring schools," I groaned.
Avi grinned. "I have it memorized."
"Oh, I've got it bookmarked," Neil added, reaching for his phone. "Top-tier rom-com energy. Right down to the part where she nearly tripped over the mic cord."
"I did not trip," I muttured, "I stumbled with purpose."
Tyler slung an arm around me, the worst kind of smug on his face. "That's okay. I'm still holding out for the rooftop version. Flash mob. Fireworks. Maybe a drone."
"Why are you all like this?"
"We're invested in the ship," Avi said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Don't disappoint your fans."
We stayed like that for a while-Tyler tucked against my side, Neil flipping through cricket highlights on mute, Avi sprawled dramatically across two cushions like a fainting Victorian aunt.
Ash was out with Ryan doing cutsy couple things...I think?
Eventually, I tugged Tyler toward the patio. Jace had joined us and the others were still inside arguing over something.
Outside, I pulled him down onto one of the outdoor mats, and we lay back under the slowly darkening sky, the stars blinking to life like they'd shown up just for us.
"Remember the first time you sat next to me in the library?" I asked.
"You mean when you nearly stabbed me with a pencil for breathing too loud?"
