"So what?" I heard a loud voice

"So what?" I heard a loud voice.

Her voice. And my pace quickened without my permission. Sure enough, as soon as I rounded the corner I spotted her.

My heart did a ridiculous stumble, tripping over before it got up and carried on hammering in my chest, at the sight of her.

She was standing outside my mom's room with Julian. A backpack was slung over one of her shoulders and she was wearing a flannel shirt, tight black jeans, and her chucks.

Shit, I had missed her.

"You can't waste a year like this. It's not even your fault! It's that prick's fault." She frowned, a line forming between her eyebrows.

"I know, V. But my Dad is trying, he said I'll be able to go to school soon," Julian calmly explained.

"How about you join our school? Because frankly, I don't feel comfortable about you going back to Edgewood high and being anywhere close Max, " she said and I smiled. That was exactly what I had been asking dad to do.

"Well, I've taken care of that." I heard my Dad's voice as he stepped out of Mom's room.

I walked into her line of sight, just as my dad walked over to where she was standing. She looked surprised to see me there, but then it was gone. Her face looked like a tense mix of emotions. Anger the most prominent one on it.

Then she turned around to look at my dad. She narrowed her eyes at him for a few seconds before she looked at me and I saw the flicker of recognition dawn in her eyes.

"You must be the infamous father I keep hearing about." She folds her arms over her chest, taking on a defensive stance.

I can't help it, but my smile grew wider at that, and apparently, my dad found it amusing too as he let out a chuckle. "Yes. And you are?"

"Veronica."

"Ah!" Dad looked at me and nodded. "Tyler's girlfriend, I was wondering when I'll get to meet you."

"I'm not his girlfriend," she corrected him quickly.

Dad looked confused but gave her a slow nod. "Well, it's good to see you."

She just tilted her head to the side in response and continued to stare him down.

"I've already spoken to your school administrators and principal. I'm trying to get Julian into your school so that he'll be closer to Tyler and his friends. Don't worry, I'll do what's best for him."

At my dad's words, the frown on her face deepened. "You'll do what's best for him?"

"Yes." Dad nodded and she scoffed.

Oh boy.

"You've got to be kidding me, " she muttered as she glanced at me, then back to Dad. A glimmer of her usual no-nonsense attitude resurfacing.
