Winter and Spring
Elana McClendon
It was a dreary winter day
when I looked in the mirror.
My eyes were dark and turbulent
as the sky before a storm.
Birds ceased their light whistling,
and the cold permeated the edges
of my mind.
Crash, bang!
My mind shattered into pieces.
The sun no longer shone brightly through
the high window of my bathroom.
I released the smooth wood
of the bathroom cabinet; that
couldn't even ground me.
My tongue was left with a salty
taste, like my mouth was full
of oceans.
Because I could remember
when the flowers bloomed,
when my mind wasn't barren
and bone-chilling.
Vibrant greens and yellows used to
flood my vision, but pale blues and
grays replaced them.
When Winter came, she chased
out everything that was happy
like a hound nipping at my heels.
She left a bitter taste
in my mouth, forcing me
to choke on bile and bitterness.
But when Spring came,
she left behind the sharp aroma
of blooming flowers.
Spring allowed me to smile
back at my reflection. she
was the one that made me
whole.
Winter was dark and lonely,
but Spring was light, calm,
and warm.
She makes the sun shine
when I behold my reflection;
She is a champion.
