Summer
Elana McClendon
Joy is a book
that I carry with me
as I trail my father.
I am like a fishing hook
that never leaves his side –
his most proud possession.
Summer is a tattoo
embedded in my skin,
like a map that guides
me to reminders of
him.
Summer sings softly
like chirp, chirp of crickets
that surround the fishing
creek at just past sunset.
I am a red and blue firework
that threatens to ignite the midnight
sky, comforted by my
father right before he lights me.
The stinging sensation of
a cold drink rests firmly
In my hand; it reminds me of
fish fries and family reunions.
Summer creates the vibrant
oranges and pinks that paint the
sky; They mark the end of something
great but the start of something new.
The salty smell of meat sizzling
on the grill causes me to reminisce;
It infiltrates my nostrils and
consumes me.
The sweet taste of watermelon
reminds me of him; it replaces
the grief-stricken memories.
