𐙚 chap. 17
It was very safe to say, end of year testing was kicking your arse. You were taking your O.W.L for your advanced Defense Against the Dark Arts class, and just standard fourth year testing for all of the others, that aside, the boys were also being annoying as ever, and practically driving you up the wall with questions whenever you stepped foot into the Gryffindor Common Room. So much so that you had started to avoid it, and moved your studies with ever so responsible Remus who was hanging on by his last thread it seemed.
Whenever the two of you would get together for studies, or anything else, he seemed to zoned off to care about anything. He'd started acting like that around the time of his birthday, and he just seemed more closed off than usual, which was certainly saying something.
Things with Regulus were obviously very complicated, as they always were. He'd say something, and you'd take it the wrong way, or you'd way something, and assume he took it the wrong way, leaving you in an endless cycle of wondering whether or not one of you should've said what you did, leaving studying with him to be very awkward as well. Emi and Pandora had grown out of their phase of being too taken up by each other, and started hanging out with the group again, but obviously they didn't want to study, which left you alone, unmotivated, and struggling to focus.
You had considered dropping out about five times since taking your Potions exam last week. You weren't even half-bad at Potions, but the thought of you flunking the exam was enough to make your head spin. You knew your parents wouldn't care what score you got, but James had told you that most jobs you apply for in the Magical world looked at your grades from as far back as fourth year, so you felt like these last years at school really mattered more than they actually did.
Walking around the school, you looked like a zombie compared to other kids in your grade. Regulus looked refined and stoic per usual, Emi didn't really care, considering she practically had a guaranteed spot in the Ministry due to her family and their connections, Pandora didn't really care much for grades, saying that the answers always came to her when she needed them, Evan was too busy sorting out Barty's shit to study, and Barty Evan's.
It was utterly exhausting watching the people around you excel in their different ways so easily when you felt as if you were holding on for dear life, just to get a passing grade. It wasn't as if you were dumb, no. You were just burnt out, it sounded stupid considering you were practicing magic all day, and not doing any of the extreme Muggle schooling that the No-Mag community went through, but magic was more tiring than you would've expected.
When you had started Hogwarts, all of the teachers had called you a 'gifted child', and would write that you had a bright future into the reports written to your parents once a term, never a bad word for at least three years, and all of the sudden, this year, you were slipping. No 'amazing student' titles attached to your name, but nothing bad to say either.
That's what led you to Flitwick's office, seeking guidance form your Head of House. "I see.. so you're worried about your grade records?" He looked through the pile of parchment that contained all of your assignments from his class that had been graded this year. "Well, I suppose you have nothing to worry about in Charms, your lowest grade in here all year has been an 'A'. I can't exactly say for your other classes, so you will have to talk to your teachers." He surmised.
You nodded. "Thank you, Professor. I'll be sure to do that." You got up, and left his classroom with another thought.
'Some help' You thought. You started to walk to McGonigal's office, she had been mor help over the school years than Flitwick ever really had. If anyone could actually give you guidance, it would be her. Upon arriving outside of her office, you noticed a couple of other kids waiting in the corridor for their turn to talk to her, so you stood in the group, waiting for your turn, you were zoning out, when a voice pulled you out of your thoughts.
"Hey, you're [Y/N] Potter, right?" A brunette boy asked you, from his accent, you assumed he was of Spanish decent, he had a Slytherin tie on, but he was in the line of Gryffindors, just like you.
"Yeah, why?" You asked, not exactly snappy, but you couldn't imagine it was in a very nice tone of voice considering he recoiled slightly.
"Oh, I'm Leo Garcia, we have Defense Against the Dark Arts together, you're the fourth year in our class."
"Now that you mention it, you do look familiar. I guess I'm just too busy with James' group, I don't branch out a lot in that class."
He laughed, revealing dimples in his sun-burnt cheeks -- he must've been one of the kids who sat outside the second the sun started shining. "Yeah, I've kind of noticed that, they surround you like a pack of rabid dogs most of the time." He joked.
You wanted to laugh, but you were far too awkward, you were cringing yourself out. "Yeah, they just kind of do that."
Your conversation was interrupted by a very weary McGonigal peaking out of the door saying something along the lines of 'Was that the last one?' only to see the two of you, she sighed. "Potter, Garcia. Which of you was here first-- Actually, I don't really care, one of you just get in here."
You looked back at Leo, who was bowing ever-so dramatically. "Ladies first," He said jokingly. You laughed a little bit that time, and thanked him before heading into McGonigal's office.
