Kehlani sat at the dinner table remembering the next day Matikahs mom broke the news to her. She cried on kehlanis back porch waiting for her to get home. They had been 3 peas in a pod since kindergarten, lived on the same block and had the same dreams. They just wanted to make it.
Jordan had gotten out earlier than they had planned which only made them want it more. They sat on the porch watching Jordans big brother chance and his friends chat it up like they weren't phased. Kehlani hated the ground chance walked on. He was the reason Jordan had to leave. Chance was a 16 year old blood who got his brother mixed into his mess between the crips. But he sat there smoking and laughing and glancing at Kehlani with his nasty grin.
2 months later the girls decided to walk down the same street Jordan was attacked on. "I wonder where Jordan threw his shoes" Matikah wondered. She walked up to the trees and saw one.
"Kehlani I found one." It was dirty but was still in good shape. They eventually found the other one. Matikah was taller than both of her friends so she was able to fit the shoes. "They're a little loose but I think I can rock em... Right" she asked kehlani. "I wouldn't try to rock em" Kehlani laughed. "They're to remember Jordan" Matikah tried to explain. "He still comes to visit Tikah leave those uglass shoes here". She took the shoes anyway and hand washed them but the blood stains still wouldn't come out.
Kehlani caught herself smiling at the dinner table. "What's funny" her cousin asked. "I was just thinking about when me and -" "oops don't care" her cousin said joking, kehlani playfully throw a newspaper at her.
She got up from the dinner table, picked up the newspaper, and headed to her room. She started to read the comics and thought about her 14th birthday.
Matikah had wrapped her gift in newspaper comics. When kehlani opened it, it was a picture of mitikah and kehlani when they were little eating water melon with no front teeth. "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" they sang that song until their teeth grew in. She smiled but it turned into a frown when she realized she didn't have the picture anymore.... "Kehlani open the door" she knew that voice anywhere. "Ms.Justine Skye is that you?" She hugged her friend that she had missed so much. Justine and Kehlani were room mates. And they both wanted kehlani home. "What are you doing here Skye?" "I'm here to see you of course babe, and I came to party" Kehlani braced herself for the night they were about to have . "But first we have to go shopping!!" Justine didn't know about Kehlani's wrist and she did her best to hide it from her.
