The board feels a little foreign under my feet. It's been weeks since I've touched it—longer, maybe. Between work and chaos and whatever's been happening between me and Billie, skating kind of... slipped.
But now we're here.
A small private bowl in Echo Park. Rented out. No cameras, no fans, no one but us and the hum of overhead lights. Billie's the one who set it up. I didn't even have to ask. She just handed me my board this morning and said, "Thought you might want to go remind yourself you're cool."
Now she's sitting cross-legged on the edge of the concrete, hoodie sleeves shoved up, sunglasses perched on her nose even though the sun's not out anymore. She's watching me with a soft smile like she's not judging but very much cataloguing every move.
I push off gently. My legs remember what to do, kind of. The momentum builds, the wind nudges through my hair, and for a moment, it's just muscle memory. Just rhythm and tilt and air.
I carve into the curve, feeling the old fire light in my chest again. I don't go high. I'm not trying to impress her. I'm just trying to feel like myself again.
"Still got it," Billie calls from the sidelines.
I coast to a stop and grin over at her. "Barely."
"Hot," she adds, like it's just an observation. "Very hot."
I roll my eyes and try to hide the flush crawling up my neck.
She bites her lip and watches me bend down to adjust the trucks. And I know that look. I've seen it before. That curious, locked-in gaze she gets when she's thinking something she probably shouldn't say in public.
It does something to me.
She's just... sitting there. Hair up in a messy claw clip. Hoodie loose on her frame. Her nails are chipped. She's not trying. She doesn't need to.
And still, every time I look at her, I want things I didn't let myself want for a long time.
Like what it would feel like to pull her onto my board and have her pressed against my back. Or to corner her against the fence of the skatepark just to kiss her until she forgets her own name.
I push off again, harder this time, carving sharper into the curve. My muscles are warming up, the balance returning. The board answers under my feet like it missed me too.
I glance at her again.
She's still watching. Still that same lazy smile. Still absolutely ruining my ability to focus.
I drop into the bowl again, let the movement pull me under and back up, let my legs work through the stiffness. But the longer I skate, the harder it is to ignore the twist in my stomach every time I think about how she looked at me earlier in bed.
Hair messy. Voice low. Fingers trailing under my hoodie like they owned me.
I mess up the landing slightly and hop off the board, huffing out a breath.
"You good?" she calls.
"Distracted," I admit.
Her head tilts. "By what?"
I smirk. "You."
She grins like she's won something. "I'm just sitting here."
"Exactly."
She blinks behind her sunglasses, then pulls them off slowly. "I could stop sitting."
"Don't tempt me."
She crosses her arms, clearly enjoying this too much. "Are you thinking what I think you're thinking?"
"I'm thinking you in that hoodie is a crime against my focus."
Billie stands up, walks over to the edge of the bowl, and crouches down to meet my eyes. She smiles in that way she does when she knows she's in my head.
"Come up here," she says. "Take a break."
I climb out of the bowl and let her pull me in by the collar of my shirt. She kisses me, just once, slow and soft and way too casual for how badly I've been thinking about her all afternoon.
"I like you like this," she whispers, forehead resting against mine. "Sweaty. Cocky. Flustered."
I kiss her again, deeper this time. My hands grip the fabric of her hoodie. I tug her flush against me.
She makes a soft sound that absolutely ruins my ability to think straight.
"Maybe I should skate more often," I murmur.
"You really should," she says, fingers curling in my hair. "For both our sakes."
Then I kiss her.
Not soft this time. Not lazy or teasing. This kiss is heat under my skin and ache in my chest, the kind of kiss that pulls a sound out of her throat before she even realizes it.
Her back hits the fence behind her with a soft thud. My hands slide under her hoodie, fingers curling around the waistband of her sweatpants, pulling her closer. She gasps into my mouth, lips parting wider, and I take full advantage—tongue slipping past hers, deepening it until she's clutching the front of my shirt like she needs it to breathe.
It's hot.
Not just temperature. It's the way her body arches against mine. The way her fingers press into my sides. The way her mouth moves like she's trying to memorize the shape of me. I kiss her until my knees feel loose and the world blurs at the edges.
And when we finally break apart, we're both breathless, foreheads pressed together, her lips red and swollen.
"That," she whispers, "was not very break-like."
"No," I murmur, brushing her bottom lip with my thumb. "But it was very necessary."
She closes her eyes for a second, exhaling. "You kiss like you're trying to set a record."
"You complaining?"
She shakes her head slowly, her hands sliding up under the hem of my shirt, warm and possessive. "Just trying not to combust."
I grin, leaning in to steal another kiss. This one lands just below her jaw, slow and deliberate. I feel her whole body respond to it.
She bites her lip, eyes fluttering open again. "You're dangerous."
"You're the one who rented the place out."
"And thank God I did," she breathes, tugging me closer by the waistband of my jeans.
"We shouldn't... Not here." I breath out
"But what's the fun of that?" Billie persuades.
We don't move for a long time. Her arms wrapped around my waist, my board forgotten on the concrete behind me, her mouth still ghosting over mine.
I don't care about the trucks anymore. Or the stiffness in my legs. Or that I hadn't landed clean.
Right now, all I care about is how good she feels wrapped around me like this.
And how badly I want to get her alone again
