"Beast. Tyrant. Merciless. They whisper these names behind my back. But when I say, I love you, it is not out of desire, nor out of denial. It is not for my sake at all. I love you for what you are, for what you do, for how you fight. I have witness...
Above stairs, Naiomi heard the commotion. She rushed down and froze at the cellar’s entrance: her sister pressed against the wall by the King.
“What’s happening?”
“How dare you presume to act like my companion,” Maegor spat, still gripping Alicent’s shoulders.
“Companion?” Naiomi whispered, confused.
“I was only trying to find you,” Alicent breathed, tears sliding down her cheeks in fear and shame.
“I didn’t ask for pity, Lady Alicent. Nor your letters.” Maegor released her and took a slow step back.
“L-letters?” Naiomi’s voice trembled.
“I meant no harm, Your Grace,” Alicent half-sobbed. “I was reaching out as a friend.”
Maegor scoffed. “Do I look like I need a friend? Or have you lost your fucking mind?!”
Alicent swallowed. Fear gripped her.
Maegor gripped her. “Or are you still holding onto the memory of last year,” he seethed, “when you chased me in the rain like a common street-wench?”
Naiomi’s face went pale. “Father said she went out for her necklace… so it was—?”
“I didn’t run,” Alicent hissed, voice trembling.
“Then why slink like a cat in the storm?” Maegor pressed, voice cold.
A strained silence followed. Alicent’s expression hardened. She met his glare.
Maegor glared back and roared, “Shut up! You’re starting to irritate me, Lady Alicent. Or do you want to fill Mellario’s shoes? Women at court, vultures circling the carcass.”
“I would never insult her memory,” Alicent snapped defiantly.
Maegor sneered. “But you watched us, me and Selena, behind closed doors. Naked.”
“That isn’t true,” Alicent whispered.
“You lied then. And you lie now. You disgust me.”
Alicent’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m not like them…”
“Then explain the letters you wrote,” Maegor interrupted. “Do you think I didn’t read your feelings behind every carefully crafted word?”
“I only wrote because... because I cared about you. We were worried...”
“ We? Or just you?” Maegor snarled, eyes narrowing dangerously.
Alicent opened her mouth to speak, but he leaned in. “Listen closely. Do not ever cross that line again. I will have your tongue torn from your throat before I suffer another ounce of pretension.”
