I was running. My feet were aching, my breath quickening, pace hurrying. It was gaining speed. I didn't need to look back, for I know that it is evil, and that it wants me, it wants me dead. Just as I was about to reach the door, I tripped. I felt it leap on me. I find my self waking up screaming, sweaty, in my bedroom.
"Sweetie, are you alright?" Mom peeks her head through the small crack that she opened in my bedroom door.
"Yeah mom, I'm fine." Must've been another bad dream...
"Ok, but back to sleep, you have school later." She closes my bedroom door, while I look at my alarm clock. 2:45 am. I drop my head back on the pillow. Tomorrow's going to be a long day...
I find myself waking up from a dreamless sleep by the sound of an alarm clock. I gently moaned as I hit the alarm clock with my hand. Another "exciting" day ahead. I stared at the mirror that was in front of my bed. I scratched my head with dark brown hair. I stared at my almost lifeless gray-blue eyes. Just stared, I really don't know how long I've been laying there, but it must have been a long time. "SPARK!!! YOU'VE BEEN UP THERE FOR 30 MINUTES!!! GET DOWN HERE YOUNG MAN!!!" Oh shit. Mom hates it when we are late, she makes it a rule to always be early. I quickly slip on a white shirt and some black shorts. I ran to the bathroom and poured a thick layer of toothpaste on the toothbrush. "SPARK GOODWILL COME UP HERE RIGHT NOW! BREAKFAST IS ON THE TABLE!!!"
"Okay mom!" I yelled as I ran out of the bathroom. I was halfway down the hallway when I realized that I forgot my backpack in my room: I rushed back down the hall.
"Spark! What in the name are you doing?! The bus comes in 15 minutes!"
I grabbed my back pack and my notebook that I left on my nightstand. I was about to get out the bedroom door when I bumped into something. I felt my bottom hit the floor, and I heard a snicker."Wow you nerd!" she laughed. She gave me a hand and , as dumb as I am, accepted it. She squeezed my hand instead of helping me up though. I felt a short squeal release from my mouth that I was struggling to keep in. She laughed.
"Cut it out, Bia!"
"Awww!" She snickered, "Did the 7-year-old Sparkie hurt his wittle fingers?" She is such a jerk. Bia is my older sister that I'm forced to live with. Just because she graduated high school she thinks that she is practically mom now.
"You know I'm 15! What do you want, Bia?" I said harshly.
"Awww... Sparkie! You hurt my feelings!" She gave me a pouty face and put her hands on her chest. When she got no response, she gave me a plain, dull face and used her big girl voice. "I want back that 5 dollars that I loaned you weeks ago. I want it now."
"Cant it wait for another time Bia?" When she gave no answer, I sighed. "I have 5 dollars on the nightstand." I pointed to the white-gray nightstand next to my bed.
She smiled. "Good boy." She patted my head and took the five dollars. Then she walked out of my room and slammed the door. I was saving that money...
"SPARK!!!" I was interrupted of my thoughts by a voice screaming, it sounded a lot like mom. "SPARK LATTY GOODWILL YOU ARE GROUNDED FOR THE WEEK AND YOU GET NO BREAKFAST!!! GET DOWN HERE NOW!!!" Thanks a lot Bia! I went down the hall with my stuff, and went into the kitchen to see a steaming mother. All she did was point her spatula to the door. "Out."
-----------------------------
"Hey, you don't look so happy." I turned to my best friend George."Ya think?"
"Geez, sorry man. Just pointing out the obvious..." I rolled my eyes as the bus kept going.
"Hey George, I bet that his mom got onto him again." I turned my head to see my best friend, Youth, "Right Spark?"
"You bet," I said, "I'm grounded. One week."
"Ohhh..." Youth made her scrunched up face, "Not good, not good. But hey, it's not like me. I got grounded for a month when I was caught asleep in class. One whole period. Yeah, parents weren't happy..."
I smiled, "Nice to see that someone has a suckier life than me."
"Hey look guys, school." George grabbed his duffel bag while pointing at a tall, gray building. "School Number 56" the sign at the top of the two doors at front read. The bus pulled to a stop, and we all grabbed our things and went out the door. I took a look at the sky. Since we all are in a dome, the sky we see isn't a real sky. It is a huge computer-monitored screen that shows what a day looks like. Since it's February, the screen shows what it would look like on a gray, cloudy day. In spring, it shows little puffy clouds and a blue background. Summer, it shows a blue background. And finally in fall, it shows a mostly cloudy screen with a faint blue background. The background never shows a sun, because Allegiance decided that drawings, books, paintings, and anything that had to do with the sun should be destroyed. Allegiance decided this because it would remind of the loss of Dome Fortress, which was destroyed by the heat and by the sun. At night, Thechity turned of the screen, for no moon would show thanks to the deadly metor showers it gave to Earth back all those years ago. No stars showed either, it was just a black screen.
"Ok class, please open your Techs Textbooks to page 765," Mrs. Glads ordered, "We shall be studying the way that Thechity grows within the years, and we will answer the questions on the board. You stop reading on page 780." She pointed to the screen in front of the class, and finished writing down the last question with a stylus. I started reading my textbook. Like I said, this is going to be a long day. We eventually finished the assignment, it was time for lunch.
"Free period!" Mrs. Glads opened the door. "I want everyone to come back within 45 minutes, sharp. Understood class?" There was a small amount of mumbles such as "Yes" and "Ok", so Mrs. Glads dismissed us.
"I love free period, it gives me time to study and catch up." George mumbled through a mouthful of bread, writing in a Magnetics study guide.
"Catch up for what, college?" Youth snickered stuffing apple in her mouth, "George you have like the highest grade rates in school. It's like your practically graduated!"
"Well, yeah, but," George took another bite of bread, "If I don't stay ahead like this, then I won't become Allegiance or Thechity, and I defiantly don't wanna stay in Publicity." Youth shrugged her thin shoulders, agreeing that he's right.
"I wanna get into Creates, don't know about you guys. I feel tough enough to join, so don't judge me." Youth gave a tough snarl. I actually believe that she is tough enough to get into Creates. She is the toughest girl that I know, she once beat up Hill Gilmer, a bully that was like 3 1/2 feet taller thn her. I know that she's my friend and all, but I really wouldn't get on her bad side, if you know what I mean.
"N-no, I k-k-know that y-you will g-g-get in." George said, obviously nervous as well.
Youth have a sweet smile, "Awww, thanks Geo!"
"Hey, whatcha want to get into, Spark?"
I paused for a second. I guess that I don't know what I want, government? No... Science? No not that, Farmer? I really have no idea, but I'm sure that I don't really want to be Publicity forever. Although, if I can't choose a group, then I might have to stay in Publicity. Well, sure, Publicity has a lot more jobs than any other group. My own father is a cashier, and that is part of Publicity, but I feel that the other groups are special, because they all have certain jobs and reasons to work in out society. Publicity is also the lowest ranked group, for there is Allegiance on top, after that there's Thechity, then there is Justice, afterwards Metics, then Creates, next up is Edunites, then is Farmity, and lastly is Publicity. I don't want to be Publicity, I want to be, well... Special.
