Toru's POV
My phone vibrated in my pocket as I received a text from an unknown number. I unlocked it and read the unknown sender was from the kind man at the cafe from yesterday.
"She'll do it! TOMO SHE'S GOING TO TEACH US! " I ruffled Tomo's hair as I walked past. He was half asleep on the sofa, and literally jumped to standing bolt up right. He blinked, astonished and not quite sure if he understood what he had heard me say. He rubbed sleepy dust out of his eyes and blinked hard as if he was soaking in what I had said.
"A-Ambra-san is going to help us? I though she would say no.." He rubbed his eyes once again, and then pulled out his phone, text somebody, then put it away in his shirt pocket again. I heard a phone go off in taka's room and out he leapt.
A muffled version of "Tomo you owe me a bottle of sake! I can't believe she's going to-" became clearer as Taka bounced out the bedroom with glee.
"YOU BET ON IT?! COME HERE YOU LITTLE SHIT"
"Nooooo" Taka slipped out of reach within a split second and disappeared back into his bedroom.
"I should have known you were plotting something Tomo. We have to meet her tomorrow morning to discuss things."
"Taka's idea, he persuaded me! You can go for us right?" He smiled his cheeky grin and then sauntered off to his room yawning, everybody was still jet-lagged from our last trip away. Sleep was their main priority right now, I was just shocked and embarrassed that I would have to see Ambra again. I decided to have a cigarette and then head to bed like the others.
...
The next morning I got up and ready to go to the cafe and meet Ambra-san, the others where still asleep and Taka was at an interview with a big magazine. I was beyond nervous, and smoked about 5 cigarettes before getting to the cafe.
"Good morning Sir."
"No Sota this morning?"
"He's out collecting supplies"
"ahh okay then, just a coffee please." I had just sat down and taken off my jacket when Ambra walked through the door in a two piece suit and heels again, a clear plastic a4 box of paper pressed in between her folded arms, a pair of glasses in one hand. She looked studious with her hair slicked back into a neat ponytail.
"good morning. An Espresso please." Once she was done paying for it, I stood up to greet her. "Good morning. err should I really call you Toru-san? I figured thats not your family name?"
"my family name is Yamashita, but I would prefer you to call me Toru. Should I call you something like Sensei or your family name?"
"yes, Toru-san it is then. You can just call me Ambra, I'd rather nobody knew my surname for now and I don't want to be called Sensei, I may be your teacher, but I'm only doing this casually and you're older than me. Are the others not coming today?"
"Taka is at an interview and the others are still jet lagged."
"thats fine, next week it should be you all together so I can get you to practice talking to each other." She put on the glasses and opened the folder to take out a pen and paper. I hope this isn't for me, I had never really written english characters that much. But we began just by going over what I already knew in english, the paper was for her to take notes. Her hand writing was perfectly slanted, small and joined, I had never seen anything like it. English was so complicated! An hour had passed and I was already more confident in myself having been corrected a few times to the habits I had gained and was eager to learn more.
.."So I would say I like coffee not ..I like the coffee"
"Well it depends in what context and tense you would say it." She passed a piece of paper across the table to explain. "I like coffee", is a general statement. If you want to say you like the coffee that somebody has given you, you would say "I like the coffee, thanks" and if you are pointing to a coffee packet you like.. You would say 'I like that coffee"
"Okay that makes more sense.. I think" I studied the paper and then gave it back.
"I think you've done really well today Toru, but I have to go back to work now." She begun packing her things up and stood up. I copied her and slung my bag over my shoulder as I followed her out the crowded little cafe. "I'm going to have a cigarette before leaving if you want to talk a bit more?"
So we made our way through the maze of tables and I asked "Next week could you come to our flat to teach us?"
"er.. I suppose so. Is there a reason?"
"We're not used to being in public so much with being in a band. I'm lucky I escaped the paparazzi this morning"
"Oh I didn't know.. Sorry for being inconsiderate." We paused at the front door to light our cigarettes. I was amazed she didn't know about the band, with us having just sold out a live show at the Yokohama arena again, there were billboard posters of us everywhere!
"Hey it was fun, you make learning easy." She looked a little shocked, but it transformed in to a beautiful smile within a split second, and then it was gone again.
"Well you've already learnt the basics.." She went silent and looked at her feet.
"Is something wrong?"
"No.. I just want to apologise for running off the other day. I got so wound up with Sota and everything, I got embarrassed."
"Hey I should apologise for being the one that knocked you over. I was in a.. 'rush'? Is that the right word?"
"yeah, you know you're better than you think you are." She nudged me with her elbow playfully and smiled. "Well, I have to go Toru. I'll see you next week, you have my number, just give me a text with the address"
"Okay, Bye Ambra-san" I bowed and she waved as she started to walk down the street away from me. Ambra you are melting the ice around my heart but here I am alone again.
