I stare at the girl looking back at me in the mirror as I try to figure out who I am and who I am not. Am I the girl I am suppose to be? A girl who takes care of her family and village, who is kind, smart, and loving? Or am I the girl I have dreamed of being. A girl who does anything anyone says she cant, who is fearless, adventures, and brave. Our whole life are based on trying to figure out who we are and who we aren't yet I cant figure out who I am. My eyes shift to the window. I slowly place one foot in front of another moving towards it. Then I find the reason that I am still here in this old run down house. The reason I will never be the girl I have dreamed of being. The wall. A strong grey stoned wall stretches for miles in height and height. No one knows whats on the other side. Our towns law forbids us from ever finding out. We are not aloud to even go near it. They believe it would be a "sin" upon yourself and the village. The wall, it must be there for a reason. A wall doesn't just show up and if someone were to build one, we would know the reason why. I turn my head to the door.I grab my coat and close the door. My feet touch the cold, wooden steps as the voices from the kitchen get louder.
"Good morning darling." My father says as he places a cup of tea down on the coffee table.
"Good morning father, Brother." I say as I put my shoe on the chair and start to tie it. The lases of the shoe runs threw my figures.
"Where are you going Anabella?" My brother, Arlo, asks.
"Town, and please, call me Ann, A." I say as I swing my jacket behind me. Arlo hates when people call him by his real name so he told us he wanted to be called A instead. My farther and I agreed and have called him A ever since. As for me, Anabella doesn't fit me or my personality, so I go by Ann.
"I will be back before brunch." I say closing the door behind me. My shoes touch the hard rocks on the road as I walk past men and women. I slip my hands into my pockets as people glance at me. I slowly let my head dangle avoiding eye contact with crying children and sobbing adults. I look up to see a little boy holding a hat in front of me filled with two silver coins.
"My family is poor, and I don't have anything to eat tonight, Could you, donate a coin for my family and I?" He says as I notice the scar across his noise. His hair is filled with ashes and his bruised cheeks. My eyes start to fill with tears. I place two coins in his hat as his eyes light up. He gives me a hug wrapping his thin, yet strong arms around me.
"Thank you. Thank you!" He says crying. I wipe the tear that fill my eyes away and smile.
"Always remember, there's a happy ending, to every story." I say closing my eyes and raping my arms around his. He lets go as he runs off laughing in joy to a dirty tired man sitting up against a home. I smile and keep walking. I reach the markets where I place 15 coins on the counter.
"One squirrel please." I say.
"Nice to see you too Anabella darling." Rosey an old store clerk says as she stands up. Rosey has been working here ever since my mother passed away. Shes like family to father Arlo and I. She was my mothers best friend too. Rosey is all we have left of mother.
"Hello Rosey. Nice to see you again dear." I say smiling at her.
"Just the squirrel?" Rosey says walking around the shop.
"Yes please. That's all we need for now." I say trying to keep track of where shes going.
"I am sorry darling, we are out of squirrel." Rosey says heading back towards me.
"That's okay." I say placing the coins back in my jacket. As Rosey walks past me, I notice a bracelet on he wrist. I has a charm of two children holding a diamond and a heart with wording in it. Rosey smiles at me.
"It was your mothers. She gave it to me about a week before she passed." Rosey says taking off the bracelet.
"You miss her more than anyone else. Here, keep it." She says putting the bracelet down on the counter. I dig threw my pocket full of money trying to take all of it out but she places her hand on my hand.
"You can not put a price on love my darling." Rosey says kissing my cheek.
"Now, get back to those boys before the destroy your house." She says with a smile. I place the bracelet in my pocket and smile.
" Thank you Rosey, for everything." I say as I start my way back home. The sound of moving rocks comes from below my feet as I make my way home. I think about mother mostly. How she would brush my hair and tell me stories. How she would dance in the garden with me. I remember the day she died too. A tear slips from my eye. Not every story, is a fairy tale.
