"Don't forget, boss." Sebastian's seething voice grazed against the tip of her ear. "The closer you keep your enemies, the easier it is for them to harm you."
His confident smirk would have wiped off Natalie's smugness had she not seen the look in his eye. A fleeting flicker, a moment of hesitation and the slightest hint of doubt — he was too soft to pull off anything remotely evil.
After all, thundering clouds seldom rain.
"Would love to see them try." She smiled and turned her back towards him, inspecting her face in the mirror for any possible cracks in her makeup, only to come across a terrifying image. Breath stuck in her throat, she realised a bit too late that the reflection staring back at her wasn't just hers or Sebastian's.
There was a third person present there.
As if by a twist of fate, the face that was usually her shelter in the darkness turned out to be the same one that made her heart race with panic now. Did Nick overhear her conversation with Sebastian? Did he know—
"I came looking for you." He announced and she observed him for signs that would give away whether he had heard them, whether he found out. But there he stood so casually, hand resting in his pocket, a glass of red wine in the other as he leaned on a pillar behind them. Though his voice felt calm, his posture was anything but. Because the cheerful Nick she knew was gone and in his place was the business partner she knew. Cunning, calculative and possibly a bit cruel.
Jaw clenched, it felt like he was about to throw hands anytime soon. She wondered if it was just jealousy that made him act this way or if his actions meant more than they showed.
Before things could escalate, she stepped away from Sebastian, next to her boyfriend now. "Nick, we were just discus-"
"I know what you both were talking about." He interrupted, a little too out of character for him. All of it was — his anger, his short sentences, his clenched fist. Something was definitely on his mind, troubling his peace. "Did you find out anything about her?"
