'Because I love someone who loves someone else. As selfish as it sounds, it hurts a lot to know you love him more than me...'
Kai laid alone in his bunk. His own words playing over until he felt stupid for saying them. He felt stupid for climbing. He felt stupid for letting go. And he felt even more stupid for feeling stupid.
Was that what people meant when they say love makes you crazy?
"Grrr," he threw his good arm over his face ignoring the ache and burn it brought. "I only made things worse . . ."
Had no one caught him in time, Kai would have died. He would have splattered all over the deck just like an egg. And right in front of his little sister.
"You shouldn't be awake."
Recognizing the voice, Kai sat up only to hiss and lay back down. He turned his head trying to calm his breathing which was short and painful.
"(Name) . . ."
You walked toward the bunk carrying a bowl and a glass.
Sitting beside him, you told him to get up. He had a pink hue on his cheeks as you helped him sit up.
"Wh-what is it?" Kai coughed out as he tried to hide his stutter.
"Tomato soup," you replied as you lifted up a spoonful to feed him. "I volunteered to look after you until you got better. It was either me or Garmadon and everyone figured you'd rather have me."
He grinned. "Yeah, I definitely would. Better you than anyone else."
As you fed him, Kai couldn't help but think of how kind you were to him. And how cute you were helping him. He blushed at the thought of spitting out his secret, though wasn't it obvious by now?
He honestly tried to tell you and even show you how much he cared about you. They were simple things yes but he wasn't sure how to approach you. He didn't think you even felt anything more than friends. Kai was eventually willing to wake you up in the middle of the night to tell you, but by then he was too late.
You loved someone else. Someone better than him. Someone stronger than him.
You fell in love with someone he knew you deserved.
"Kai?"
"Yeah, (Name)?"
"You're bleeding."
His breath caught in his throat as you leaned in to wipe the blood running down his lip. From that close, Kai just had to. He didn't think about anything. All he wanted was to show you he loved you.
"Kai-" He grabbed your arm pulling you on top of him. He hissed in pain but pressed his lips against yours with as much passion as he could. His injured arm slung over your back pushing you closer against him.
When Kai let you go he was too out of breath and tormented to even feel the harsh slap against his face.
Your face was red. In a mix of anger and embarassment, you pushed yourself away from him. "W-why ..." You wiped your lips as if trying to erase the feeling of his lips touching yours. "What the hell, Kai!"
Kai flinched. You were furious at him and he knew it.
"I-I'm sorry," he swallowed. His heart sped up as his adrenaline kicked in. Stupidity poured out of his mouth.
"I want you, (Name)!" Kai screamed. "I love you more than anyone and--and I don't even understand how or why! Everyday I see you . . ." Kai's voice dropped to a whisper. He clentched his hands, lungs burning and eyes looking wildly around the room. He spout out whatever came in his mind without even looking up. "I know we're only going to get farther apart . . . When I saw you two together like that, I didn't even know what to think. It hurt. A lot. It hurt more than anything that'd I've done. . . "
The memory flashed into his mind. His friend, the person he considered a brother and family, on top of you. The sound of your voice saying you loved him. Not Kai but him.
"I just want us to be together!" Kai yelled snapping his head up with a crack.
Kai's voice shook as his hope vanished. His stomach sunk and his heart ached.
You left him.
"I love you . . . (Name)..." Tears trailed down his face "I'm sorry . . . Please don't leave me . . . "
