Chapter 3: Tacky Tuesday

With great regret, I am participating in Tacky Tuesday.

I almost gave my parents a heart attack when I showed up to the breakfast table in rainbow leggings, a unicorn horn, cat ears (complete with painted on whiskers bc I'm Phan af), and a giant red sweater.

"OH MY GOODNESS! Uh... I mean... You look beautiful honey?"

I laughed. "Ma, it's Tacky Tuesday!"

"What?"

"It's for Spirit Week!" I giggled.

"Spirit Week?! Who are you and what have you done with Minerva?" My dad joked.

"Oh come on, I'm not some soulless robot." I protested.

"It's no secret that you're not the most school spirited. You've never even gone to any games!" Dad chuckled.

I pursed my lips. "I'm not spending my Friday's sitting on a cold bleacher watching sweaty people chase a ball."

"Well, I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. Now come eat."

"What the hell are you supposed to be?" Luke asked me at my locker with a chuckle.

"Says the guy that looks like an escaped munchkin." I snorted.

He rolled his eyes. "I'm too tall to be a munchkin! Anyway, what color dress are you wearing to Homecoming?"

"It's-"

"Ohmigosh hi Luke!" This girl came strutting up and strewn herself all over him.

"Hi... Stacey. Look, I can't talk to you right now. I'm talking with Mina."

She looked me over with disgust and I glared back at her. "You've been talking with her for the past 2 weeks! What about me?!"

I honestly felt so bad for her. She was obviously someone that still thought the Ye Olde Social Hierarchy of high school still existed; meaning that because I'm The Nerd, I shouldn't be friends with The Jock. And she should because she's the "Queen Bee".

That's probably how it worked in the early 2000's, but now, there's no such thing as a "Popular Table". Just sit where you want.

Luke looked so uncomfortable with her writhing. "I really don't wanna discuss this now. You need to leave."

"It's her isn't it?! You should be with me! I could make you popular!"

"I don't want to be friends with you people! Why would I want to be friends with people like you who mocked me all while we were growing up?"

She sniffed. "Well fine! You can stay with your loser group. All of you should be sitting with the kings and Queens; not some peasant."

I've had it.

"Okay, I've said nothing to you, so why do you feel the need to be so rude and try to bring me down? If he doesn't like you it's not my fault. Maybe you should look at yourself instead of blaming others! Grow up!" I turned on my heel and stormed off to class.

I am so sick of these people constantly being so superficial and rude.

"Mina, wait!" Luke caught up to me and turned me around with a hand on my shoulder. "I'm sorry about what happened back there! I-"
