I tap my pencil against the wooden table, the person in front of me turns around and glares. I keep tapping my pencil on the desk, a little louder this time. The girl turns back around and flips me off. I giggle and keep tapping, quicker this time. She turns around again “Shut up!” The substitute looks up from the textbook which she was reading out loud, did Mrs.Carter forget to tell her that half the class is deaf?
“What’s going on girls!” I play dumb and pretend I can’t read her lips, I wonder if she even knows sign language! “Don’t pretend you can’t hear me!” I can’t help but laugh. One of the boys next to raises his hand, “She really didn’t tell you?” She looks at us like we’re crazy, “Didn’t tell me what?” The class bursts out into laughter, one of the boy’s answers but I can’t see his lips from where I sit. The substitutes mouth drops open “You all are deaf? How come you can tell what i’m saying?” I roll my eye’s and answer, “Most of us can read lips perfectly.” She looks up at the clock and realized that it’s time to dismiss. The substitute stands there and looks at us like we’re alien freaks. I smirk and wave goodbye as I slip out of the classroom, secretly happy that i'm out of that stupid class.
I accidently bump into a student on my way out. The black service dog walking by his side nudges my knee, throwing me off balance. He bends down and picks up the books, his lips move but I miss what he say’s. I bend down and help him pick up the books, noticing a small tattoo on his left wrist. What’s the point of having a tattoo if you can’t see it? “What’s that?” I point to the lopsided figure. He answers “It’s a tattoo” his lips curl into a smile, “Haha very funny! I just don’t see the point in getting a tattoo if you can’t see it.” He looks at me straight in the eye and laughs “It makes me feel normal.” I look at him and realize all his gorgeous features, his dark hair, blue eyes, and beautiful smile. He’s like a freakin demi god!
I stand up and hold out my hand “My names Destiney.” He grabs my hand and shakes it in one perfect moment, how do blind people do that! “My names Eli.” He smiles again and his beautiful eye’s light up, gosh he’s perfect. He speaks again “Well I gotta go! Meet me after school in the car riders lane, I wanna hang out more.” My stomach twists and I smile uncontrollably, did I read his lips wrong? “Umm ok, see you then!” I exhale deeply and walk off with a huge grin, did that really just happen!?
